DIY WATER FILTER

Creating a water filter is fun and cheap

way to do or may be will not cost you
any penny. Filtering water remove impurities of
water, in this project we use pebbles and sand as a
water filter.

MATERIALS:
1 glass sand 1 empty plastic bottle of any kind
small-sized pebbles

contaminated water large-sized pebbles
scissors

STEPS:
1. Cut the bottom part of the empty plastic bottle
with scissors.
2. Make a small hole to your plastic bottle caps for
water passage.
3. Fill in the empty water bottle with sand, small-
sized pebbles, and large-sized pebbles,
respectively.
4. Place the bottle right above the glass and pour the
contaminated water on the water filter.
5. Wait for the water to be completely filtrated.

the wild. Although it is not a complete form of water
purification, this water filter can help remove impurities,
which can make the water look clean. To make it safe to
drink is to kill bacteria. The best way is to boil the water
for no less than 3 minutes.

PROBLEMS I ECOUNTER:

At first, I tried putting on some crushed
charcoal as shown in some DIY water filter in Google
but since cloth is not allowed, fine charcoal particles
escaped through making the filtered water black. And
since only rocks are allowed I disregarded the use of
crushed charcoal.

RELEVANCE OF WATER FILTER IN THE TYPE OF
ROCKS:

As the water travels through the sand and
gravel, small impurities and pathogens get trapped in
the sand and gravel. The process is very similar to river
water passing through rocks and emerging cleaner on
the other side. Each of these layers removes different
things, leaving the water that comes out of them clean.
The first layer, large-sized pebbles, is there to remove
large pieces of debris from the water. Next are the
small-sized pebbles, which traps debris from the water
that the large pebble cant. The water then moves on to
the sand layer, which removes smaller particulate
matter that managed to pass through the large and
small pebbles. In summary, filtration of water goes
through a lot of process from the pebbles to sand
media.

While this method of filtration is certainly
useful, it is not perfect. Water filters can only reduce
certain contaminants and dirt but not the bacteria; you
may boil the water no less than 3 minutes to kill the
bacteria and make it a safe drinking water. To sum it all
up, water filters reduce contaminants by either
physically blocking their passage through the filter. In
general, we use sand and pebbles because it will not
travel with water and further dirty it. And which could
be a great drinking water alternative for survival.
