HP-UX 11i Operating System Sample

Installation 1-

This chapter contains the following sections:

Planning
HP-UX 11i operating environments
Installation overview
This chapter contains the following procedures:
Procedure 1-1 Backing up all systems
Procedure 1-2 Installing HP-UX 11i from CD
This document contains a typical installation of the HP-UX 11i operating
system on an HP workstation. It is intended as a guideline only. The actual OS
installation steps may differ. For your OS installation please refer to the OS
installation documentation provided by HP.

Planning
To complete this task it will be necessary to do the following.
identify affected systems
understand system requirements
order or upgrade hardware as required
Identify affected systems
Create a list of all the systems that are to be installed and in what order. It is
also important to understand the current hardware and software configuration
of the systems.

Understand system requirements

See Applications Platform Planning Guide, 450-3101-601 to determine what
hardware platforms are recommended and supported to run HP-UX11i (64bit)
and the AP software.

HP-UX 11i operating environments

CAUTION
Correct version of HP-UX 11i required
To ensure platform consistency and stability, you must use
either the Technical Server stream 11i technical computing
operating environment or the Commercial Server stream 11i
operating environment.

It is important to understand the differences between the various HP-UX 11i

operating environment streams to ensure the correct installation and use of the
HP-UX operating system. Hewlett-Packard provides two main streams of
operating environments, a Commercial Server stream and a Technical Server
and Workstation stream (see Figure 1-1).

The stream and operating environment to be used for AP software deployment

is one of the following:
Commercial Server stream 11i foundation operating environment.
Technical Server stream 11i technical computing operating environment.
Do not use installation CD-ROMs with
hp-ux11i minimal technical computing environment
hp-ux11i mission critical operating environment
hp-ux 11i enterprise operating environment
See the Applications Platform Planning Guide, 450-3101-601 for more
information on the HP-UX operating system in an AP environment, and for the
list of supported hardware platforms and platform configurations.

Installation overview
In order to follow the installation instructions as outlined below, the following
assumptions are made about the environment.
System type is either recommended or supported. To identify the model,
use the command model.
All necessary firmware patches are installed.
Some systems may require firmware upgrades that must be installed
manually prior to re-installing the recommended HP-UX 11i revision
level.
To confirm the firmware level:
a. Log in as root and shutdown the system by entering the command
shutdown -h.
b. Switch the system off.
c. Switch the system on and watch the console message. Press any key
when prompted to cancel the automatic boot sequence.
d. Check the firmware revision (boot ROM) displayed at the beginning of
the boot process. If it is less than 2.3, it needs to be upgraded.
e. Consult the HP-UX 11i Installation and Upgrade Guide for firmware
upgrade details. HP may periodically update their recommended
firmware patches for certain hardware. Always refer to the appropriate
HP documentation to ensure your system meets the minimum
requirements specified by HP.
Systems must meet the minimum hardware requirements as described in
the Applications Platform Planning Guide, NTP 450-3101-601.
You must have root access to each system.
You must have the HP-UX 11i installation CDs ordered from Nortel, and
the appropriate licensing from HP.

Procedure 1-1
Backing up all systems

CAUTION
Destruction of existing data
Installing HP-UX 11i wipes out any data on the existing file
system. Make sure the system is backed up, if required, and
all configuration information is noted.

Step Action

1 Backup all systems to a network disk or non-volatile media.

The type of backup is dependent on what hardware is available. Review the
HP-UX11i installation and upgrade document Preparing for Software
Migration Backup Your System for specific details.
2 Backup the AP application data on each system.
Refer to the chapter on saving and restoring the configuration, application,
and user data in the Installation and Administration Guide, 450-3101-201.
3 Note all critical system configuration data so that it may be entered on the
newly installed system.
a. Determine the hostname by entering:
hostname
b. Determine the host IP address by entering:
nslookup <hostname>
Note: If the system has multiple network cards then it will be necessary
to gather the information for each of the cards.
c. Determine the Configuration information for each installed Network card,
including gateway and subnet mask using SAM.
Enter sam
Select Network Interface cards.
Select each card to see the details.
d. Depending on the particular site installation there may be a DNS Server
and Software Depot server. Contact the site prime to determine if these
systems exist at this site. If it exists, determine the Distributed Network
Server (DNS) name and IP address by entering:
nslookup <DNS server>
e. If it exists, determine the software depot name and IP address by
entering:
nslookup <SWDepotname>

Procedure 1-2
Installing HP-UX 11i from CD

This procedure describes an installation from CD. Use this procedure to either
install an Ignite server that will then be used for subsequent installations
install all the workstations in your network from CD
For more information on installation options, see Installation overview on
page 1-3.

The following instructions are taken from the HP-UX 11i Installation Guide.
Before beginning this procedure, check for any last minute technical updates
to the install procedures on the HP web page at
http://software.hp.com/products/IUX/

Requirements
You need to know:
The system values obtained in Procedure 1-1, Backing up all systems
(this includes Hostname, IP Address, and Subnet Mask).
The default gateway IP address
The required disk partition sizes for the number and size of disks. The
required disk partition sizes can be obtained from the Applications
Platform Planning Guide, NTP 450-3101-601.
You need to have the HP-UX 11i CDs which were ordered from Nortel, for a
supported release of HP-UX 11i. The following releases of HP-UX 11i are
supported:
HP-UX 11i OE, June 2001 release (2 CDs)
HP-UX 11i TCOE, March 2003 release (2 CDs)
HP-UX 11i OE, June 2004 release (4 CDs)
Action

Step Action

patches recommended by Nortel must be applied. The recommended OS patch
bundle is updated periodically. Refer to the Nortel website for the most up to
date information.

The OS patch bundle is released with an associated Readme file that explains
how to apply the patch bundle to your system. The administrator should always
read the documentation before attempting to install the patch bundle. In
addition, the documentation provides instructions on how to set the required
kernel parameters for the system.
