1.a) Explain the various strength theories of failure. (3)

b) Show the graphical representation of the theories for 2D stress system. (3)
c) A cylindrical shaft 7 cm diameter is subjected to a maximum bending moment of
4 kN-m and a twisting of 5 kN-m. Find the maximum principal stress developed
in the shaft. If the yield stress of the shaft material is 600 Mpa, determine the
factor of safety of the shaft according to the shearing stress theory of failure. (6)

2.a) Explain the R.R. Moors and Wohler fatigue experiments. (4)

Fatigue strength and Fatigue life on these curves. (4)
c) Distinguish between the infinite life and safe life design concepts. (4)

3.a) Compare Goodman, Soderberg and Gerber Fatigue design formulae. Show them
on a graph. (4)
b) A shaft 70 mm in diameter of normalized steel 0.37% C transmits power at
150rpm. If the torque is 1.75 times the mean torque and maximum shear stress
theory is applied, determine the overall factor of safety k for the following data:
y = 300Mpa
u = 600Mpa
e = 260 Mpa. (8)

4.a) Discuss various mechanical and metallurgical/ chemical methods for

improvement for Fatigue strength in metals. (6)
b) Explain the process of Auto frettaging for the enhancement of fatigue strength of
gun barrels. (6)

b) State Orwans modification to Griffith Theory. (2)
c) Using Griffith Equation determines the critical crack length for steel for the
following:
critical = 1100Mpa
= Surface energy per unit area = 1.4 J/m2
E = 210Gpa
What would be the critical crack length according to Griffith-Orwan equation
Take p = plastic work required to extend the crack wall = 1200 J/m2. (6)
