Day 8 Lesson Plan Outline

VS3g: Interactions between Settlers and Native Peoples

Learning Objectives
Students will assess the relationship between the English settlers and Native Peoples and will explain
changes in the relationship between the English and Native Peoples.

Materials and Advanced Preparation

• Video “The Powhatans & Trade” from http://www.historyisfun.org/powhatan-trade.htm and ability

to play the video for the whole class.
• 1607: A New Look at Jamestown

• Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone

• Selected texts copied into powerpoint to be projected while reading

• Comparing Perspectives T chart for students to fill in

• Chunked reading selection “The Powhatans and The English”

Teaching and Learning Sequence

• Introduction/Anticipatory Set

• Students will picture walk through the sections “Green Gold” and “Winners Take All” from
1607: A New Look at Jamestown.
• Students will Think-Pair-Share and make predictions about the relationship between the
Native Peoples and settlers and how the relationship may have changed.

• As a class, we will discuss and record our predictions about the interactions between the
Native Peoples and the English settlers.

• Lesson Development

• Students will be given a blank T chart to be used for Comparing Perspectives. As they
listen to the readings, students should take notes about each passage.

• Students will view the video “The Powhatans & Trade” about the interactions between the
English Settlers and the Native Peoples.
• Students will take notes in their Comparing Perspectives chart.

• Read out-loud the section “Winners Take All” from 1607: A New Look at Jamestown (text
will be projected for all students to follow along with).
• Students will take notes in their Comparing Perspectives chart.

Jamestown Unit Plan

• Read out-loud a section from pages 188-191 of Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607
(text will be projected for all students to follow along with).
• Students will take notes in their Comparing Perspectives chart.
• Students will Think-Pair-Share to discuss their Comparing Perspectives chart and write
one sentence which summarizes the changes in the relationship between the English and
Native Peoples.

• Closure

• As a group, we will review and share the students’ Comparing Perspectives charts,
making sure to address any questions the students may still have.

• Then, I will direct classroom discussion to assess the predictions students made at the
beginning of class about changes in the interactions between the Powhatan and the English
and compare our predictions to the outcomes we examined in class.

Homework
Students will read the chunked selection “The Powhatans and the English” and will draw an illustration, or
illustrations, which show the relationship between the English settlers and Native Peoples.

Assessment

• Formative – Monitor students during Think-Pair-Share to ensure they are understanding the
material and staying engaged.

• Summative – Comparing Perspectives chart and illustrations will accurately show the relationship
between the English and Native Peoples and will show changes in the relationship.
