Biology I

2016-17
Instructor: Mr. Neisen

Class Overview:
In this class students will study the major principles of cell biology, genetics, and evolution. The content
of the class is over Chapters 1-15 in the textbook.

Classroom Materials:
1. Textbook
2. 3-Ring Binder (To keep notes and folder)
3. Writing Utensils (no red pens)
4. Science Folder (To keep assignments in)
5. Loose Leaf Paper (Place in Binder)

Classroom Rules:
1. Bring all needed materials to class. (Be responsible!)
2. Be in your seat, quiet, and ready to work when the bell rings.
3. Respect all school personnel and fellow students at all times. (Be respectful!)
4. Raise your hand to be called upon to speak.
5. No drinking, eating, or chewing of gum in the lab.
6. Respect other peoples property
7. Obey all school rules
8. Follow safety rules when present in lab. (Be safe!)
9. Do not open windows, turn on fans, or pull shades unless called upon.
10. Do not enter the lab storage room without permission from Mr. Neisen.
11. No Cell Phones in class
12. Dont tip your chairs
13. Do not touch the gas jets or faucets, unless asked to do so.
14. Stay out of drawers unless you need the materials to do a lab

Grading:
All assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests will be graded on a point by point system. For example, a quiz
that has 10 questions will typically be graded out of 10 points. If you miss 2 questions you will receive an
8/10 or 80 percent.
The grading scale is district wide, and can be found in your student handbook.
Students will be notified at the midway point of each quarter about extra credit.
Students can turn in late work for 50% credit

Estimated Breakdown of Grade per Quarter:

Tests: 40%
Quizzes: 10%
Homework: 35%
Labs and Projects: 15%

Total: 100%

CH. 14 History of Life

-Compare techniques for dating fossils
-Sequence the events that might have led to cellular life

CH. 15 Evolution
-List the four principles of natural selection
-Describe how fossils, morphology, and physiology provide evidence of natural selection

-Students will also be required to do a capstone genetics project on fruit flies, which will incorporate the
use of the scientific method process. This project will take place during the 4th Quarter.
