Synthesizing is act of understanding and comparing other peoples

arguments to further develop ones own argument. It helps our writing as it is like
writing a summary, but at the same time it can communicate the different points of
view to the reader. By synthesizing, the readers can have a much better
understanding of the academic conversation that is occurring preceding the writing.
In addition, it also helps articulating the writers argument in the overall context of
the conversation.
Cynthia Havens article talks about how the contemporary college students
are writing more than ever before according to Andrea Lunsfords five-year study on
Stanford Students. Students do not only write for school as per the study, only 62
percent of all writing work contributed is done for academics only. Haven
generalized as students are experiencing a revolution of writing as they are writing
for themselves with medias such as blogs, tweets, Facebook messages, and emails
as oppose to the traditional mediums. In Josh Kellers article, he uses many pieces
of evidence to both support the claims of the study. Keller begins with an anecdote
of the student participating in the study which begins a discussion into the
arguments of the if the Lunsfords study. Although both Haven and Keller heavily
reference the Lunsfords Stanford study, Keller also use many other researches such
as Michigan State and George Mason. Haven is more of an in-depth analysis and an
explanation to describe the Lunsford study, whereas Keller is a more of a discussion
that includes many of the different studies currently existing on the topic of writing
in College.
I stand with Havens arguments as students are writing so much more in the
world due to the advancement with our technology. Anecdotally, I have greatly
benefitted from the cultural shift towards heavy writing not only academically but
also socially as I can be found every day and communicating at a significant
amount. I really feel like I resonate with the closeted poets statement in Havens
article as I also write a significant amount of poetry, because I love how it manage
to truly express the person that I am. I would never share them, however, as I am
too shy for people to know the true me.
