Primary Colour Shape Trays with Texture

Name: Keanna Gordon Date: February 3, 2017 Age Group: 4/5 years old
Purpose (Observation OR Discussion):
My supervisor explained that her classroom portion of the centre is designed to help
children prepare to be a part of a typical classroom setting. The children in our class
room are working on learning things that are similar to what they would be learning
within a typical school setting.
Experience:
Label: Primary colour shape trays with texture
Objectives (three)
1- Hold conversation about the primary colours; red, yellow and blue
2- Explore common shapes such as squares, circles and triangles in addition to
uncommon shapes such as hexagons and pentagons
3- Work on sensory definition by exploring different textures (smooth, bumpy ect)
Description:
Who is involved?
I will be involved with two learners in our classroom, as well as their therapist.
Where will the experience take place?
The experience will take place on a table within the classroom portion of the centre.
What materials will be used?
Materials that will be used will be three different shape trays in the primary colours; red,
yellow and blue. The shape trays each have 6 pieces with varying textures.
Implementation (step by step)
1) Invite the learners to do the activity with me
2) Ask the learners what colours they see, and what type of colours they are
(primary colours).
3) Ask the learners what shapes they see and if they can name them.
4) Get the learners to empty their shape trays and mix their pieces with the other
trays.
5) Request that the learners find the appropriate shapes for their trays.
6) Ask questions about what the different textures they are feeling
7) Invite the learners to switch trays with each other, and repeat the process
Relevant precautions or restrictions?
N/A
Reflection:
I feel that the activity went well. The learners where easily able to identify the

different colours, and one of the more advanced learners knew right away that they

were primary colours. Both learners were able to identify the common shapes. The less

common shapes were easily named by the more advanced learner, and his intelligence

never ceases to amaze me. They both seemed to enjoy mixing their shapes with each

other and fitting them back into their trays. It was nice to see them take turns

cooperatively to each be able to have a turn with each colour. As far as the texture

portion goes, the learners were not very interested in feeling the shapes or discussing

the different textures. I think once again that the activity was very easy for one learner,

but not as easy for the other. I am finding it hard to find balance between the different

levels and skills of the learners. In the future I think it would benefit me to tailor my

activities that are meant to be educational to one learner or the other. That way I can be

more specific, and hopefully have the activities be a greater learning experience for

them.
