Fun times at the
Coral Days Festival
A great time was had by many at the Coral Days Festi-
val in downtown Coral. This was the 7th year as a weekend
celebration, from what began as a one day community
event. Sponsored by the Coral Fire Department, the festi-
val took place Friday, June 25th and Saturday, June 26th.
There were numerous activities planned for young and
old, single and family alike.
The Friday before, the annual Coral Days Pageants
was held at the Coral Community Center, with Nichole
Franken winning the crown for the 2010 Miss Coral. The
new Junior Miss is Melaina Wykes and Prince & Princess
are Hunter Merlington and Brooke Chapin. The Grand
Marshals, Mr. & Mrs. Dean Larson were introduced dur-
ing this time also.
A Car & Bike Show kicked off the festival and had
the largest number of cars & bikes attending since the
event began. Local Fire Departments came for the annual
Firemen’s Water Battles, which was a lot of fun to watch.
Coral Cowden Lake Bible Academy started Saturday’s
events with a free pancake breakfast. There were 3-on-3
Basketball, Horseshoe & Volleyball Tournaments going on
in the park, along with the craft and flea market vendors
displaying their wares. With sirens blaring and crowds
cheering, the grand parade made its way through town,
with a variety of floats. Rusty the Clown was painting faces
& creating balloon animals for the kids. Firemen were
busy grilling brats and hotdogs, while Chari Miles enter-
tained as folks were eating. Pedal Tractor Pulls showed
children testing their strength and the Soapbox Races had
future NASCAR drivers racing their cars! In between, the
“Fun for all Ages” was in full swing with hometown games
and contests.
We were very excited to have The Stolen Horses
Band come back to perform for us in the evening with a
free concert in the park. These guys are seasoned musi-
cians who have performed shows with many national acts,
and two of their songs are currently being played on Coun-
try Radio. Folks brought their lawn chairs and enjoyed
the concert. Concluding the celebration, at dark was the
annual Firemen’s Night Parade of Lights.
With the help and generosity of volunteers
throughout the community, Coral had another successful
festival. Thank you to everyone who helped put it together
and make it all happen.

Spectrum Health named one of nation’s top 10 health systems

GRAND RAPIDS – Spectrum Health
was named one of the nation’s top 10
health systems today in an annual study
analyzing clinical and financial perfor-
mance. Spectrum Health was the only
health system in Michigan to receive the
“Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals:
Health System Benchmarks” honor.
Researchers from the Thomson Re-
uters 100 Top Hospitals® program ana-
lyzed the clinical quality and efficiency of
255 health systems to identify the top 10.
“This recognition is an honor and it
reflects how well the entire system is per-
forming,” said Spectrum Health President
& CEO Richard C. Breon. “The fact that
we are one of 10 in the nation and the only
health system in Michigan to earn this
award is a tremendous reflection on the
efforts of physicians and staff at all of our
facilities. We are being recognized for our
improved outcomes and our systemwide
focus on quality improvement. This trans-
lates to better care and better value for the
patients we serve.”
The Thomson Reuters study assessed
all U.S. health systems with two or more
short-term, general, non-federal hospi-
tals. Researchers looked at eight metrics
that gauge clinical quality and efficiency:
mortality, medical complications, patient
safety, average length of stay, adherence
to clinical standards of care (evidence-
based core measures published by the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services), 30-day mortality rate, 30-day
readmission rate, and HCAHPS patient
satisfaction score.
The top health systems were an-
nounced in the June 21 edition of Mod-
ern Healthcare magazine.
“These health systems outperformed
their peers by a wide margin,” said Jean
Chenoweth, senior vice president for
performance improvement and 100 Top
Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters.
“They provided better care, saved more
lives, had fewer medical complications,
and made fewer patient safety errors
— even though they treat sicker patients,
on average. They set the standard for the
industry.”
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hos-
pitals: Health System Benchmarks is an
annual, quantitative study. With objec-
tive, independent research using public
data sources, they identify the 10 health
systems setting the highest benchmarks
on a modified 100 Top Hospitals Bal-
anced Scorecard focused on clinical qual-
ity and efficiency.
The winners of this award outper-
formed their peers by providing better
care, following standards of care more
closely, saving more lives, creating fewer
patient complications, making fewer
patient safety errors, and earning better
overall patient satisfaction scores.
This year’s top health systems had:
n 12.3 percent fewer mortalities than
peer systems
n 13.2 percent fewer complications
than peer systems
n 5.4 percent better patient safety
than their peers
Patients returning home sooner
— with an average length of stay more
than half a day shorter than at similar
systems — and with better longer-term
outcomes than other health systems.

OBITUARIES
James Fox
James Fox age 67 of Howard City, passed away
June 25, 2010 at his residence. He was born June 13,
1943 in Clarksville, MI the son of William and Mildred
(Pitcher) Fox. Jim drove truck for most of his life and
served his country in the US Navy. He enjoyed playing
golf and he loved his pet (Ginger). Surviving are two
children James (Julia) Fox, Daphne (Russ) Orr all of
Howard City, three grandchildren Barbara, Judy and
Tyler, three Brothers Ray (Gerry) of Fort Worth, Kenny
of Arizona, Orville (Loretta) of Grand Haven, and
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by his parents, his wives Barbara and Colleen, sisters
Virginia and Grace, brothers Lee, George and Bruce.
As Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no

Erna Weber
Erna Weber age 86 of Pierson, passed away
June 24, 2010 at Spectrum Health Butterworth
Campus. She was born July 29, 1923 in Passau
Germany. Erna came to the US in 1948. She loved
golf, hockey and gardening and was a member of
the Casino Club. Surviving are one daughter Mar-
lene (Doyle) McKenney of Pierson, where she has
resided for the past seven years. Two sons Robert
(Roz) Weber of Ionia,
Joe (Ellen) Weber of Wyoming, three grand-
children, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
husband Robert in 2003, a grandson Andy McKen-
ney in 1988, and a granddaughter Tracy Weber in
2007.
A memorial mass took place on Tuesday at
Christ the King Catholic Church with Father James
Wyse officiating, with inurnment in the Resurrec-

Attend the Morley Man in critical

Free Fest July 10
With summer officially here, the Mor-
ley Merchants Council is preparing for the
Morley Free Fest which while take place on
July 10.
This annual family fun event is ex-
pected to draw in more attendees than in
past years with their various raffles, games,
sales and shows. The event will begin at
11am with the Flea Market and wrap up at
11pm.
Beginning at noon registration will
open for the motorcycle show with the
judging taking place at 2 p.m. To get your
kids involved, there will be a kid’s class
motorcycle show (for anything on wheels)
and inflatable devices available until 9pm.
The beer tent will also be open to the
public at noon and will close at 10pm. The
whole community can get involved with
the local flea market and the organized
town yard sale.

MECOSTA TWP. – A 21-year-old man is in
critical condition following a one-vehicle acci-
dent that occurred Wednesday night near the
intersection of 185th Avenue and 11 Mile Road.
As of noon on Thursday, Dustin Peterson
was still listed as being in critical condition by
Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where
he was airlifted.
Mecosta County Sheriff’s deputies were dis-
patched to the accident at 9:30 p.m. After losing
control of the vehicle, Peterson went through
the intersection and traveled about 200 feet
into the woods, striking several trees. Excessive
speed was believed to the factor in the accident.

Sheriff’s Office.

JOHN SNOW’S “TOWN”

Stearns paved the way by building the first sawmill dam on the Little Muskegon River at The Fork, 1836-1837. He and his crew cut
the first wagon trail up to The Fork from the Shingles Hotel/Grist Mill on the Rogue River, somewhere near the Old State Bridge on Pine
Island Drive just north of 10 Mile Road in Kent County. This road ran about 22 miles north to The Fork (Croton).
Stearns cut the first trail north and east of The Fork to what is now 56th Street, across Stearns Prairie east to what is now Beech Street.
This also shows up on the 1837 Survey. This trail was used by the loggers to haul the logs to the rollaway where they were stockpiled in
the winter to wait for the high water in the spring, and for the millponds to unfreeze. Not only may old footings be found if one looks hard
enough, but also some evidence of the “narrow” gauge railways may be found on the east side of the Muskegon River. These railways
were used to haul logs for stockpiling before going down river, or to the mills for sawing.

Make the Most of the Beach BIG BEN’S

Nothing beats a relaxing vacation at the beach.
That is as long as you ARE relaxing. If you’re
tense and worked up because you haven’t
properly planned for your time on the sandy
shore and in the wondrous water, you’ll need
a vacation to recover from your vacation. And
since beach vacations aren’t cheap, you don’t
want that. Here are some things to keep in
mind to maximize your fun on the beach.
First, everybody obviously needs swimsuits,
other apparel and accessories (we told you
it wasn’t cheap). For a suit, get something
that’s comfortable and doesn’t restrict move-
ment in any way. Along with swimsuits, you
might need a change of clothes if you’re not
going directly back to your hotel room. No-
body wants to go to dinner in a swimsuit-wet
or dry-so plan ahead and bring a change of
clothes with you.
Along with the swimsuit, each member of
your party needs flip-flops or sandals. Some-
times it’s a long hike from your car or room to
the beach and your feet can burn. And if it’s
not that hot, you still need footwear in case
there’s glass or other debris on your walk.
Another good accessory is sunglasses. Get-
ting a headache because you’re squinting all
the time is a great way to ruin your time at
the beach. Also, don’t forget hats for every-
body (preferably wide-brimmed for better
coverage), towels and blankets to lie on. You
better resign yourself to buying a large beach
bag-you’re going to need it to cram in all this
stuff.

Brake For Problems

What do you consider to be the most important part
of your vehicle? If you think it’s the brakes, you are
correct because without the ability to stop your ve-
hicle, you’re like a projectile in search of a target.
That’s why it’s important to pay attention to your
brakes.
Having your brakes checked periodically is a good
idea and can stop a problem before it starts. You
won’t find yourself having to pump the brakes to
stop your vehicle, which could lead to a collision.
Not every brake problem warrants a replacement.
Before buying new brakes, you should check the
level of your brake fluid. If it is low, fill it up and
pump the brakes a couple of times while the car is
running. Slowly drive the car around to see if the
brakes have improved. You may just need a new
brake line. To detect a leak, park your vehicle over-
night, move it a few feet in the morning and look
for a wet spot. Even a small leak can affect your
brakes’ function.
Usually you can tell when you need new brakes.
You will hear a grinding or squealing noise coming
from the wheel area of the vehicle. The louder the
noise, the worse the brakes are. If you notice smoke
coming from the wheel area, you should stop driv-
ing and have your brakes replaced immediately.
There are a number of problems you can experience
with your brakes. Some of these include:
• Clunking brakes may indicate that the bolts hold-
ing the brakes together are loose. You could also
have worn or broken suspension components.
• Spongy or weak brakes may indicate low or con-
taminated brake fluid. If the fluid is contaminated,
you will have to bleed your brakes and put in new
fluid. You could also have worn brake pads.

To lease or to buy, that is the question.
The answer is it depends. There is no
right answer; it depends on what is best
for you. Both are methods of financing
a car. One finances its use, the other its
purchase. Both have advantages and
disadvantages, and the choice depends
on what’s most important to you. Do
you live for the here and now, or do you
look to the future? Most “here and now”
people don’t want the major repair risks
and enjoy having a new vehicle every
two or three years. For people looking
toward to future, they want long-
term savings and ownership. Neither
philosophy is right or wrong.
If you buy a car, you are paying for the
entire cost of the vehicle. You normally

Meet Joe - A male boxer dog looking for
a new home. He’s just one of the many
dogs and cats available at the Mont-
calm County Animal Shelter in Stanton.
JJoe has short reddish fur mixed with bits
of white on the belly and black around
the facial area. Quite the handsome fel-
low, he’s about 3 years old and weighs
around 45 lbs. Joe is good around kids
and knows simple commands - he’d
make an excellent companion animal for an older person or
a young family. His shelter ID# is 10-06-70.

Dolphins will be helping out with the camp. Joe is one of our own,
a 2000 Newaygo Graduate. Joe went on to become a two time All
American at Michigan Tech University. After his senior season Joe
had to opportunity to play in the Division II All Star game in which
he was voted Offensive Line MVP.
Joe was then drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2005. Since then
he has spent some time with the Dallas Cowboys. He is currently
signed with the Miami Dolphins and earned a starting position at
offensive center the last 6 games of the 2009 NFL Season.
