A Day Visit to Yogyakarta

Last week, I went to Yogyakarta with my family. My father drove the car. My mother
sat beside him. My sister and I sat in the back seats.

We woke up early in the morning. My father prepared the car in the garage while
mother was preparing food for breakfast and some snacks for us. My sister and I
packed some clothes. After everything got ready and we had our breakfast, we left the
house at six o'clock.

It was about nine A.M. We arrived at Yogyakarta. First of all we visited our uncle. We
stayed there for an hour. Then we went to Parangtritis beach. We got there at eleven
o'clock. There were a lot of tourists because it was holiday. I saw many foreign visitors
too. My parents watched us playing with sand in the beach. We did not swim and take
a bath since the wave was rough. After having lunch, we went on our picnic to the
museum and Malioboro shopping centre.

We drove back to Semarang at 7 o'clock and arrived home at ten. We were tired but
happy.

A Bomb in Plane

I am used to travelling by air but only on one occasion I felt frightened. After taking
foo, we flew low over the city. It slowly wen high to the sky.

But suddenly it turned round and flew back to the airport. An air-hostess told us to
keep calm and to get off the place quietly as soon as it landed. After we landed, the
police searched the plane carefully. Everybody on board was worried and we grew
curious about what was happening.

Later, we learned that there was a very important person on board. Earlier,
somebody told the police that there was a bomb on the plane. Fortunately, they did not
find a bomb and five hours later we were able to take off again.

American History: William McKinley President Election of 1896

Introduction: Every election has a lot to do with the political and economical situation
of the country during and long before the election itself. Every event that happened
before was to become a make-way. The elections of 1986 were not an exception from
this general historical rule. The Republican presidential candidate, William McKinley
won a sweeping victory in the Electoral College, with 271 electoral votes to Bryan's
176. William McKinley received the nomination on the first ballot at the Republican
convention in St. Louis, in June of 1896. In the campaign Bryan was depicted as a
"radical and socialist", while McKinley was called a "tool of business". But if we look
through the history since 1865 all the way to the elections of 1986 it is easy to identify
certain regularities, which lead to the victory of the Republicans.

These were the premises formed by a mix of different reactions to the massive
depression, a mix of racial attitudes, the Civil War issues, and other motivations. The
1986 election brightly showed the political split of the country due to the facts listed
above. It showed a sharp differentiation between voters in the economic "metropole"-
the Northeast and industrial areas and those in the "periphery"-the South and West.
The American society has gone through a lot of changes by 1896 since 1856 and that
really caused a lot of arguments, which concentrated around the elections. The Civil
War made a deep print in the memories of the American citizens and though racial
prejudice was reduced due to the bravery of the black soldiers for some time it was
soon renewed. In the 1890s the situation in America was approaching the peak of the
race relations between whites and blacks. The number of lynching in 1892 was 230
people, and continued.Southern states invented new measures to disfranchise black
voters. In addition to that the country has gone through a hard depression by that
time and it had a great influence on the population. During the economic depressions
of the 1870s and 1890s the currency question raised a lot. Americans of different
incomes experienced the depression in very different ways. A quarter of the nation's
railroads went bankrupt. In some cities, unemployment among industrial workers
exceeded 20 or even 25 percent. The rate of suicide was very high and ran almost daily
in many newspapers. It was a part of the massive worldwide economic crisis. People
were shocked.

Conclusion: The depression was still severe in 1896, making economic conditions a
critical point of the political situation. President Grover Cleveland could not deal with
the depression which American citizens were so aware of. The American society
needed changes; a strong hand of a wise politician was required. During the first two
years of McKinley's presidency the nation returned to prosperity. The 1896 election, as
historians say was a "realigning election". The results of the 1896 elections reveal that
the American society needed to stop making "make ends meet", but had a necessity in
progress of all the vital national political, industrial and social fields.

Wolves, Dogs and their cousins

Did you ever wonder if your dog was a wolf? Well first of all wolves
are a lot larger than most dogs. However all dogs are descendents from
wolves, tamed by humans centuries ago. Although dogs are wolves,
wolves are not dogs. Dogs can learn to trust humans. Wolves can too, but
only to a certain extent. You never know when a wolf will turn on you,
even after it is trained! Dogs and wolves may seem very different but
they are also very much alike. For instance they both live in a pack. For a
wolf, their pack is a group of wolves with two wolf leaders. But for your
dog, you and your family are its pack and the leaders are probably
whoever pays most attention to it. Dogs are not the only cousins to
wolves. Foxes and Coyotes are also closely related to wolves. Coyotes
and foxes dont live in packs all the time but they do have four long teeth,
two on the bottom or their mouth and two more on the top. These teeth
are called fangs, or canine teeth. Also they all have soft pads on the
bottom of their feet to keep their feet from getting splintered or worn
down easily. Another animal that has pads is the cat. A cat is not related
to the wolf but he/she also has canine teeth and pads. The main difference
is cats have retractable nails and attack with their razor-sharp claws as
well, while wolves and their cousins attack with their teeth.

How Chocolate is Made

Have we wondered how we get chocolate from? Well this time we will enter the
amazing world of chocolate so we can understand exactly we are eating.

Chocolate starts a tree called cacao tree. This tree grows in equatorial regions,
especially in place such as South America, Africa, and Indonesia. The cacao tree
produces a fruit about the size of a small pine apple. In side the fruits are the
tree's seeds. They are also known as coco beans.

Next, the beans are fermented for about a week, dried in the sun. After that they
are shipped to the chocolate maker. The chocolate maker starts by roasting the
beans to bring out the flavour. Different beans from different places have
different qualities and flavour. So they are often shorted and blended to
produce a distinctive mix.

The next process is winnowing. The roasted beans are winnowed to remove the
meat nib of the cacao bean from its shell. Then the nibs are blended. The
blended nibs are ground to make it a liquid. The liquid is called chocolate liquor.
It tastes bitter.

All seeds contain some amount of fat and cacao beans are not different.
However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the ground nibs from liquid. It
is pure bitter chocolate.

Response Text

The book George and Martha (as well as all of the other books in the series), by
James Marshall, is in most ways a typical case prototype. The reading level that is
assigned to the book is for ages four through eight. Each book is divided into five
stories, and the stories are about two hippopotamuses that are best friends and act like
humans. Each of the stories starts with a title page that has bold yellow bubble
letters. As the pages are turned the left hand page has the print for the story and the
right hand page has the illustration for that portion of the story. This is very much
typical case prototypevery consistent, very simple in both a visual and a reading
sense. And each story is short in length endorsing the idea that children get bored
easily.
All of the illustrations are simplebasically white backgrounds with bold black
outlines and three or four colors used to emphasize certain parts of the images
(namely grey, green, yellow, and red). The pictures tell the story of everything that is
going on, which makes it more or less unnecessary for a child to be able to read in
order to understand what is going on in the story. In fact, the pictures include almost
no object in that is not directly involved in the story, meaning there is nothing used in
the background of the pictures to fill the space.
The story is as simple as the illustrations using little or no complex language or
difficult vocabulary. The story, however, is not told using rhyming endings or any
kind of rhythm in the sentence structure, which is less typical case prototype, even
though plenty of childrens literature does not utilize rhythm or rhyme. The story also
includes only two characters (save the image of the dentist in the last story). There are
no other characters introduced which also keeps the story simplified.
George and Martha supports many of the assumptions posed with typical case
prototypes; in some cases the story even supports two opposing assumptions about
children. The assumption that children like books about fantasy is supported in that
the main characters are animals that have the characteristics of humansthey are
hippopotamuses walking around on two feet, wearing clothes, and talking to each
other. At the same time, the assumption is made that kids are so egocentric they only
like literature to which they can personally relate. While the main characters are
animals, everything else about the book is based very much in a reality they can
understand. George and Martha live in a world like ours, where everyone lives in
houses, cooks meals, takes baths and goes to the dentist. The issues brought up in the
book are even those to which children could relate, such as: not liking split pea soup
but having to eat it, losing something that is dear to you, irritating habits that friends
have, or invasion of privacy. These are all concepts that a child can understand, and
therefore it fits this typical case prototype as well.

The Smartest Parrot: Example of Narrative Text

Once upon time, a man had a wonderful parrot. There was no other parrot like
it. The parrot could say every word, except one word. The parrot would not say the
name of the place where it was born. The name of the place was Catano.
The man felt excited having the smartest parrot but he could not understand
why the parrot would not say Catano. The man tried to teach the bird to say Catano
however the bird kept not saying the word.
At the first, the man was very nice to the bird but then he got very angry. You
stupid bird! pointed the man to the parrot. Why cant you say the word? Say Catano!
Or I will kill you the man said angrily. Although he tried hard to teach, the parrot
would not say it. Then the man got so angry and shouted to the bird over and over;
Say Catano or Ill kill you. The bird kept not to say the word of Catano.
One day, after he had been trying so many times to make the bird say Catano,
the man really got very angry. He could not bear it. He picked the parrot and threw it
into the chicken house. There were four old chickens for next dinner You are as stupid
as the chickens. Just stay with them Said the man angrily. Then he continued to
humble; You know, I will cut the chicken for my meal. Next it will be your turn, I will
eat you too, stupid parrot. After that he left the chicken house.
The next day, the man came back to the chicken house. He opened the door and
was very surprised. He could not believe what he saw at the chicken house. There were
three death chickens on the floor. At the moment, the parrot was standing proudly and
screaming at the last old chicken; Say Catano or Ill hit you.
