1.1.2 Description

Purple martins have some unique in relation to different winged animals that much of the
time remain around individuals' patios. They more like to see human action around their place
and have their own particular space necessities. Purple martins support wide and open regions
that offer great scavenging openings, for example, substantial streams, swamps, knolls, fields and
farmland as their home. Local locations with an open region around 40 to 50 foots square ready
to draw in martins, particularly puts that close water. A changeless wellspring of new water is
essential for purple martins and in addition different flying creatures. The suggested tallness of
the mounting shaft for Purple Martin houses ought to be from 12 to 20 feet. The air space
encompassing ought to be unhindered so they can travel back and forth in about all flight levels.

The outside of the house painted white as it ready to mirror the warmth of the sun best, so
martins picking white lodging to bring down less nestlings presented to warmth stretch. Common
determination appears to have favored the decision of white lodging by martins. White shading
highlights the dimness of the passage openings by making the holes more prominent to seeking
martins. Amid extraordinary periods, a layer of protection will give the required insurance to
winged animals.

Every purple martin house will have some spacers. The house needs ventilation openings
to counteract water stream into the compartments as appeared in figure 1.1. Furthermore, the
ventilation gaps additionally serve to permit the air to flow over every desk area. It is critical to

2
guarantee that the air is permitted to circled if not the youthful winged animals will overheat and
kick the bucket. The struts inside the story must be parallel to each other to maintain a strategic
distance from the consequent stacked story askew.

Since Purple martin houses set in the open range, so the materials picked ought to in view
of their capacity to withstand the natural components, for example, shielding the compartments
from the rain. From figure 1.3, it demonstrates that the top of the house will actually must be
secured by board to ensure the wood and occupants beneath. Materials, for example, standard
composite rooftop shingles, moved material, a bit of tin or copper, or whatever other waterproof
material can be utilized to make rooftop. A stretched out rooftop overhang ready to shields the
compartments from the rain.

1.2 House of Quality Diagram

We have few characteristic in developing house of purple martin so to develop this house
we have come out with house of quality to identify what are the characteristic is important to
develop the house so we have identified few characteristic which is small entry holes, 40 feet
above, proper dimension, nesting materials, open location, remove any predators, purple martin,
ventilation and proper color. Place for perching, ease and repairs, accessible nest compartment,
expandability. All of these characters we have comprised in the house of the quality to identify
the characters are more significant to be worried and we find out that the nest components have
the highest rating and the second highest was places for perching and ventilation and proper
color.

3
Accessible nest compartment means the perfect house is composed so that each compartment is
available for home get out. On the off chance that you manufacture a natively constructed house
with stackable levels, don't utilize nails or screws to hold the levels together. Rather, utilize snare
and-eye course of action. Compartments of business aluminum houses ought to have removable
front boards or different means for home compartment get to while places for perching means
since martins jump at the chance to have puts outside of their home compartments for loafing,
sunbathing, and trimming, they require places where they can roost.

For these exercises martins frequently will utilize adjacent wires, TV receiving wires, or
other raised structures out in the open, yet a martin house ought to additionally give roosting
places. A house that has patios, rooftop roosts, or shaft roosts is an additional fascination in
them, yet without these, martins will utilize the pinnacles and lips of the martin house rooftop for
roosting. And lastly since martin houses must be raised in wide open territories where they are

4
presented to direct daylight throughout the day, they should have highlights that counteract
overheating. Houses ought to be satisfactorily examined and be highlighted white or some other
light shading keeping in mind the end goal to best mirror the sun's warmth. Trim can be painted
any shading.

1.3 Products Contribution to Society

For the contributions to society, the Purple Martins are beneficial in the farming
industries. The purple martin is a good example of a natural mosquito predator whose mosquito
controlling ability has been grossly exaggerated. The biggest advantages of raising Purple
Martins are they can reduce the risk of successful predator attacks. A group of Purple Martins is
capable to eat for tens of thousands of mosquitoes within a single day. Besides mosquitoes,
Purple Martins also like to eat insects such as beetles, flies, moths, bees, and dragon flies, and
indirectly creating a virtually bug-free backyard. Martins will not inhabit a house placed under a
tree because of the threat of owls, hawks, and other possible predators. By keeping away from
trees and underbrush, it can reduce the possibility of Purple Martins being attack by the
predators.

These days, many people inspired by regular mosquito control put resources into Purple
Martin houses keeping in mind the end goal to actually control the mosquitoes and different
creepy crawlies amid the mid-year. Some of the organic farms are integrated the pest
management plan calls for the use of hosted beneficial birds as natural predators. By having
martin colonies around farming area, Purple Martins will help to scare away certain less
desirable birds. Martins use their numbers to chase off crows and vultures that intruded on their
nesting sites. There is another advantages which is the enjoyment of bird-watching in own
backyard. Even if not an organic farmer, hosting Purple Martins can dramatically help reduce
any flying insect pest on property in a natural way by without using chemicals that can harm
plants and animals and it can inviting a little of natures perfect aesthetic back to your home life.

2.0 Literature Review of Green Supply Chain Management

5
Green supply chain management (GSCM) transitioned from supply chain management
(SCM). This GSCM is suggested by welcoming green component into the conventional SCM
(Too, Huam, Sulaiman&Zainon, 2015). The main intention of GSCM is to tackle or reduce
wastage (Stephen & Kumar, 2015). Omariba (2015) suggested that green supply chain leverages
on environmentally friendly resources and turning them into a more effective products that can
be recycled or utilized to make better of the environment. According to (Hervani, Helms, &
Sarkis, 2005) , the reason of adding the green component to supply chain management is to
involve the influence and relationships of supply chain management to the natural environment.
Greening of supply chain include various contexts such as product design, process design,
manufacturing practices, purchasing and a broad mixture of these elements.

GSCM refers to all the phases of supply chain management which must comply with
environmental protection requirements and it can be categorize into intra or inter-organizational
environment practices (Wu, 2013).In todays world, matters relating to environments are
registering its strong presence into international trade and markets whereby consumers are in
demand for more arrays of green products as they are now more knowledgeable about the harm
that a non-green product can do to the environment. Environmental damages deriving from
commercial activities have garnered much attention from governments, practitioners and
academicians, after increasing awareness among the communities as well as efforts from
government (Malviya& Kant, 2016). To put the initiative into practice, many businesses owners
have been persistently urged to contribute their own part to shun fromforeseeable irreparable
damage to the environment in the long run. Subsequently, these firms are already implementing
various environment approaches into the various stages of green supply chain management
(Sharma, Chandna&Bhardwaj, 2015). Many firms are now more initiatives to make their supply
chain become greener in response to stricter governmental regulations and it also increased the
public awareness of environmental protection (Singh & Trivedi, 2016). GSCM has been widely
accepted by most of the organizations as one of the strategic practice in order to gain more
competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Corporate organizational boundaries deals with environmental issues have been concern
for decades because it affects on building organizational competitive advantage and it may help

6
to develop a stronger corporate environmental image. This evolution in management and
business have been resulted in develop on the supply chain and supply management fields
(Sarkis, 2011). The reason of using GSCM practices is to improve environmental performance
by reducing in air emissions, effluent waste, solid waste, and the consumption of toxic material.
In order to reach this measurement, it requires corporate organization work for it to enhance the
environmental sustainability (Fr., Zelbst, Meacham, & Bhadauria, 2012).

GSCM and conventional SCM differ in few ways. GSCM takes considerations on
ecology and economy as objectives whereas conventional SCM focuses only on economy.
GSCM are green, integrated and ecologically optimized whereas conventional SCM does not
consider human toxicological effects (Beamon, 1999). Conventional SCM usually focus on
controlling the final goods and products given the situation they do not really concern with the
harmful effects to the environment during the production and distribution process.

GSCM provides few beneficial functions for organizations which implement it. GSCM
promotes efficiency and synergy among business partners and their lead corporation
(Madaan&Mangla, 2015). The implementation of GSCM in an organization not only
incorporates the environmental philosophy, but also helps to ensure the organizations sustainable
growth ( Muduli& Barve,2013). Through implementation of GSCM, it generates a competitive
strength for organizations to improve their operational capabilities (Wang, Mathiyazhagan,
Xu&Diabat, 2016). Also, implement GSCM reveals the true assurance to sustainability.

According to (Hervani, Helms, & Sarkis, 2005) ,in order to reduce environmental impact
such as consuming fewer resources, producing less waste, creating less environmental harm ,
firms must develop an appropriate organizational structures to carry out all those particular
activities. A successful environmentally beneficial innovation motivated by economic motives
and it require new combination of knowledge such as product characteristics, process and
material characteristics and available technologies and markets.

GSCM is generally made up from several subcomponents such as green procurement,

green manufacturing, green distribution and reverse logistics approach (Aries, Diana, Wiwik &

7
Hadi, 2016). Some researchers also suggested that GSCM are made of green design, green
procurement, green manufacturing, green transportation and reverse logistics (Sharma, et. al,
2015). Green purchasing is generally a more environmentally-conscious buying activity that
literally made up of reuse, reduction and recycling of inventories (Ninlawan, Seksan, Tossapol
and Pilada, 2010).In addition, green purchasing also can be defined as environmental plans for a
firms long-term material, component or system requirements suggesting that the purchasing
function may help to evaluate the amount of waste flowing intobusiness systems (Zhu &Sarkis,
2007). As for green manufacturing, it was elaborated that only items which cause lowest impact
to the environment will be picked. These meticulously selected inputs are typically more
effective and leave little or no waste while not contributing to environment pollution. Sharma, et
al (2015) stated that green manufacturing is designed to alleviate the impact on the environment
such as reducing unsafe emissions.

Manufacturing organizations implement GSCM practices in response to customer

demand for products and services which are environmentally sustainable or environmental
friendly in response to governmental environment regulations (Fr., Zelbst, Meacham, &
Bhadauria, 2012). As global changing rapidly, customer are more concern on reuse, recycling
materials, is the packaging environmental friendly and etc before they purchase. All this become
the scope of consideration before consumer purchase their product or services.

According to (Lee, Rha, Choi, & Noh, 2013) , GSCM can be affected by various types of
pressures, which can be categorized into two categories, external and internal factors. External
factors are mostly come from stakeholder pressure and internal factors are related to specific
business strategic processes. The corporate commitment on environmental issues could improve
the percentage of GSCM implementation. One of the motivations for corporate to implement
GSCM practices may come from outsider, if the firms capabilities are insufficient to launch the
GSC on its own. Green management is getting more concern by the community; however GSCM
performance is related to various pressures which impose on the organization for GCS.

Green distribution focuses on the greening distribution that associated with customers
requirements. Reverse logistics, on the other hand, needs a more complicated exchange of

8
information and detail among supply chain members to retrieve products from consumers after a
products life cycle has ended (Victor, Koh, James & Federica, 2012).

Beside green distribution, another five practices are used to measure GSCM, such as
corporation with customers, green purchasing, internal environmental management, eco-design
and investment recovery. All this environmental issues have been played a key role in every
situation which it requires to work closely with environmental personnel. Green purchasing
(GP), an important element of GSCM , it help maintain a good relationship with customer ,
sharing and exchange knowledge between the firm and its customer. Internal environmental
management (IEM) is important in a companys ecological performance which it ensuring
support mid-level managers to carry out top managements commitment. Eco-design (ED), also
known as green design or design for the environment, this steps taken in product
development stage in order to minimize its environmental effects such as acquisition of material,
to the production and usage disposal stage. Investment recovery (IR), it happens at the end of
the supply chain cycle and it may increase a products life as the product can be recycled into
other usable material , this can ensure new product design are more environmentally. (Lee, Ooi,
Chong, & Seow, 2014)

3.0 Discussion

For the literature review part, we mentioned that Green Supply Chain Management
(GSCM) is recommended to utilize the green component into the traditional Supply Chain
Management (SCM). In related to our product design, purple martin house used the materials
such as standard roof shingles, rolled roofing, tin or copper and waterproof materials. These
roofing materials considered as eco-friendly roofing options and for long lasting used. That
suitable for purple martin house and provided the exterior of the house is white in color. White
color is recommended for purple martin house because it reflects heat. In addition, the metal and
waterproof materials also create benefits for purple martin house. The layer of insulation in the
metallic roofs will help to protect martins during the hot temperatures. The waterproof materials

9
able to prevent water filter inside the purple martin house. White color shown the darkness of the
entrance holes and it can search for martins with easily.

On the other hand, we also be conscious of the execution of GSCM in an organization not
merely merge the environmental principles, yet it helps to make sustainable growth in the
organization. For the purple martin house, there was a suitable option for farmers rather than
used the pesticides. During the summer period, farmers will tend to install more houses for
purple martin. The purple martin house created to control the mosquitoes and others insects with
naturally methods. Besides that, the purple martin house contributed in cultivating bird migration
for pest control. The purple martins help to solve the insect problems and to prevent the
extensive damage of crops for farmers. As a result, the purple martin house is the most
environmentally friendly and cost effective method to deal with the insects as well as help
farmers protect their crops.

Furthermore, GSCM is normally constituted many subcomponents such as green

procurement, green manufacturing, green distribution and reverse logistics channel. For green
manufacturing, the inputs are typically more effective and produce lowest impact to the
environment. For purple martin house, there may apply the greening of manufacturing. It
considered as the equipment that reduce the pollution and reduce the waste of natural resources
use. Water is the major component in manufacturing industry and it plays important role as
permanent source for purple martins. There are some spacers to create the purple martin house.
The house required some ventilation holes and it prevent the water flow into the compartments.
Moreover, the ventilation holes also make sure the air to circulate with smoothly. If not, the
purple martins will overheat and seriously will die. Therefore, the green manufacturing is created
the large implication on manufacturers.
