DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
THIRD INTERNAL ASSESSMENT TEST

Subject:MATERIAL SCIENCE & METALLURGY CODE-15ME22

Semester: IIIrd (MSM) Duration: 90 Minutes
Date: Max.Marks:40

1.Answer any FIVE questions 2. Each question carries 8 marks

1. Two metals A&B are used to form an alloy containing 75%A and 25%B. A melts at 650C
and B at 450C. When alloyed together, A and B do not form any compound or
intermediate phase. The solid solubility of metal A in B and B in A are negligible. The
metal pair forms aneutectic at 40%A and 60%B which solidifies at 300C. Assume the
liquidus and solidus lines to be straight. Draw the phase diagram for alloy series and find:
a. The temperature at which alloy starts and completes solidification.
b. The percentage of eutectic in the alloy at room temperature.
c. The amount of liquid present and its composition, at temperature of 390C
d. Specific gravity of alloy, if specific gravity of metal A is 2.0 and metal B is 7.0.

2. Explain the eutectic system with neat figure.

3. Explain the eutectoid system with neat figure.

4. Explain salient features of Iron Carbon equilibrium diagram with neat figure.

5. Explain the phases i) Ferrite ii) Austenite iii) - Ferrite iv) Cementite

6. Describe the effect of alloying element on the Fe-C diagram

7. Describe the construction of T-T-T diagram with neat sketches.
