IN THE CASE THAT WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RE-USE VALUES:

Consider y1 = v1, y2 = 2*v1, y3, = 4*v1. Then span{y1, y2, y3} = span{v1} since y1, y2, and y3
can all be written as scalar multiples of v1.
To see that span{v1} is not equal to S, consider the vector v2. Since {v1, v2} spans S, it
follows that v2 must be in S. However, v2 is clearly not a scalar multiple of v1, since if so
then {v1, v2} would be linearly dependent, contradicting the fact that {v1, v2} is a basis for
S. Therefore, as v2 is not in span{v1}, span{v1} cannot be equal to S. It follows that
span{y1, y2, y3} =/= S.
