OBJECTIVES: Students will play through the chord changes in Will the Circle
Be Unbroken? in the key of C Major, this will be accomplished through the
understanding and proficiency of C maj, F maj, and G maj chords.
Using a traditional bluegrass strumming sound This will be accomplished through
the understanding and proficiency of C maj, F maj, and G maj chords.
MATERIALS:
Video Camera
Ukulele
Chord cards (as needed)
DETAILED PROCESS:
Teacher will begin by introducing himself to camera and audience, as well as naming the
song to be played.
Teacher will play through v1 and chorus, while singing.
Teacher will enumerate and play three chords necessary for song.
Teacher will play first chord (C maj), and explain fretting necessary (0-0-0-3).
Teacher will turn ukulele with chord fingered, toward camera to give an overhead view.
Teacher will hold up chord card and ask students to pause video and try.
Next, teacher will play the IV chord (F maj), and explain fretting (2-0-1-0).
Teacher will turn ukulele, with chord fingered, toward camera to give an overhead view.
Teacher will hold up chord card and ask students to pause video and try.
Next, teacher will play the V chord (G maj), and explain fretting (0-2-3-2).
o Teacher will explain alternative fingering for chord, personal vs. standard
Teacher will turn ukulele, with chord fingered, toward camera to give an overhead view.
Teacher will hold up chord card and ask students to pause video and try.
Teacher will review three chords, in sequence (C-F-C-G-C).
Teacher will play the chords in time at slow tempo.
Teacher will hold up the Chord sequence card and ask students to pause video and try.
Teacher will demonstrate the strum pattern (d-Du d-Du) and finger technique.
Teacher will hold up strum pattern card and ask students to pause video and try.
Teacher will play through the song at a slow tempo, using the pattern.
Teacher will play through song at faster tempo, and invite students to sing or play along.

VA SOL 6: Demonstrate understanding of the relationship of music to history and culture

ASSESSMENT:
For students who are having trouble with a chord or aspect of the strumming
pattern, offering alternatives, such as a slower strum (beats 1 and 3) will be
helpful. Encouraging students to pause the video and try it out will help
them too. For chords specifically, emphasizing the chord placement, and
encouraging students to pause and try to change will help. Statements like
If youre struggling with [concept], it might help to [slow it down, work
with a metronome, play it while you sing, just sing it, etc.]. if students are
still having problems, they can leave a comment below the video to for
directed help.
ADAPTATIONS:
For students who wish to play a more advanced version, they can inset an a
min chord at the end of the third line of text (home a-wai-tin).
For students who want access to the visual aids, they can be linked on the
teachers website, in the description of the video.
For students with hearing difficulties, subtitles could be added.
