Make a Difference through

Differentiation!
My students need a projector, computer paper and
ink, and a laminating machine with laminating
pouches.

My Students
P079M/ Dr. Horan School is a NYC DOE, District 75 (Citywide Special
Education Programs) middle school and high school that serves
students ages 14 through 21, with severe intellectual disabilities, autism,
multiple handicaps and conditions, visually impaired and speech
impaired.

There are 269 students in our organization, 49% of which

are English Language Learners (ELLs).
The majority of our students are on the free or reduced price lunch
program and come from economically disadvantaged households.

As an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher, I have the privilege of

working with the majority of the English Language Learners (ELLs) in our
school community. My students are vibrant and are so happy to come
to school each day; they are enthusiastic to learn English and academic
material and to engage with their peers. Because my students are
unique learners, they require differentiation to access both content and
linguistic material. I create at least three different tiers of all of the
texts, activities and games that students learn through in ENL class.
However, in order to continue to differentiate, I need a little help in the
supplies department!

My Project
My students need a projector for whole group instruction. We will use
this projector to facilitate whole group read a-louds of differentiated
informational texts, whole group practice of small group activities,
whole group review and student presentations.

We will use ink and paper to print out differentiated

student activities and homework assignments; as well as,
letters home to parents.

Some of the activities may include documenting the steps to the

scientific method for STEAM projects, drafting resumes and composing
cards to people in our school community.

We will use the laminating machine and paper to create durable, long
lasting, language-building activities; such as, vocabulary board games,
flashcards, and graphic organizers. We will also use this to create icons
for students with autism and vocabulary word pictures for the word
wall.

I am so fortunate to be my students' teacher and I am so excited about

this project. Please know that any investment into this project is a direct
investment into the academic and functional English language
development of our school community's ELLs. Ultimately, this language
development will guide students in becoming more independent and
self sufficient as they transition to adulthood. Thank you so much for
your time and consideration!

2016

I am writing to thank you again for your kind and empowering

contributions to the "Make a Difference through Differentiation" project.
Because of your support, my students are engaging in a multitude of
language building lessons and activities through the content areas of
social studies and science. When the Amazon package of materials
arrived, my students excitedly took inventory and began writing thank you
cards (see attached photos).

Each and every day, we utilize and benefit from the materials that you
have so graciously provided for us. In the beginning of our workshop
model-style lessons, students use the projector to conduct a whole group
read-aloud of an adapted informational text; as well as, a guided practice
of activities. During activities, I am able to print colored, differentiated
activity sheets or games for students to engage in. Laminating some of
these activities has been a huge blessing because it saves paper and
increases the longevity of the materials that we already have.

I wanted to share with you one of my students' favorite activities this

semester: Learning solid, liquid and gas through making a pumpkin
volcano. After creating a volcano, students were able to record the steps
of the scientific method on differentiated lab reports. This engaging
project reinforced science concepts, built academic English vocabulary and
was of course made accessible to all because of your donation. Thank you
again for supporting me in creating age and level appropriate learning
materials for my English Language Learners. I wish you all happy
upcoming holidays!

With gratitude,
Ms. Sadrianna
