Introduction

1.0 Introduction

Since I was young, I had perfectly healthy skin which is often dubbed as whitish
complexion by my family members up till I was around 10 years old and that was when
things started spiralling downwards as I had a skin condition known as eczema.

It is a type of skin disorder which makes the skin inflamed, itchy and scaly. If the
patient of this disease does not take proper care of the inflamed area, it could leave
devastating scars when it heals. It will usually be a reddening followed by a darkening of
the skin in fair people and vice versa in darker skinned people. It often occurs at the folds
of the skin such as the back of the knees or the crease at the elbows. At first I thought that
it was an itch that would eventually self-heal. However, the back of my knees did not stop
itching for the next few weeks or so until it became unbearable.

My father decided to have my blood tested and find a cure for it. That was where I
met Dr. Zawawi- a naturopathy certified doctor- and became highly interested in the field
of alternative medicine and, eventually, became inspired to come up with a smoothie
recipe containing natural and raw ingredients to help target dry skin problems, also
known as eczema, as my personal project product. I have done my research via 3 sources:
books, internet and by interviewing a certified naturopathy doctor.

I want to create an awareness among teenagers ranging from 12-19 (my target
audience) that drugs are not the only cure to a disease or condition. This smoothie will
convince teenagers- as well as their parents- that remedies exist all around us and not just
in a pharmacy. By doing this I will be able to create a future generation which does not
rely on drugs unless it is imminent. This would give them a chance to explore the world
of alternative medication and give their antibodies time to strengthen. Besides that, I am
essentially improving my own writing skills as well as increasing my knowledge on
health and nutrition.

I was mostly inspired by my father as he used to take me to explore the world of

alternative medication at a local clinic located near my home. The naturopathy doctor-
whom my father is a patient to- would often lend me his books and explain how certain
diseases reacted to certain remedies. My father would also advise me to change my
lifestyle habits instead of consuming extra amounts of vitamins to improve my health.
Every few months or so, I would have my blood tested and recorded as to observe

4
whether any improvements have been made. I have read my fathers health report which
showed how he had significantly improved his health over a few years of lifestyle
adjustments. From here, I was able to conclude that naturopathy did have an impact on
peoples health albeit the fact that it takes more time and commitment before the health
results can be seen to start inclining.

1.1 Goal

I have quite a number of interests ranging from the animal anatomy to sculpting
polymer clay. However, one interest has made its way to the top of my list. Having been
exposed to the basic structure of the human anatomy at such an early age, I have built up
an intense interest on its biggest human organ- the skin. I used the mind map to help me
brainstorm for an idea for my personal project (refer to appendix 1). Then, I analysed the
possible setbacks and upper hands that I might have in accomplishing my chosen topic
using the S.W.O.T analysis technique (refer to appendix 2).

1.2 Global Context

The global context which I have chosen to base my product on is Science and
Technical Innovations. The reason why I chose this is because the research that I have
done, and will be continuing on, is based on how the human skin works. This falls under
the biology category while the smoothie recipe that I will be concocting involves
chemistry as it contains many types of nutrients that will be mixed together to specifically
help target the skin and its conditions- both which are the works and studies of science.
The smoothie recipe would then be the technical innovation which I will create once my
research has been done thoroughly and re-assessed from all angles to ensure its security
and validity. I delved deeper into how my product would help its targeted audience
beyond its intended purpose (refer to appendix 3).

1.3 Subject Specific

To create my product, I would be using a mixture of biology and chemistry which

therefore makes them the subjects that I will be using to guide me through my project. I
predict that one of the later stages of my product will be the testing phase where I will
gather a few people, or just one, who will be the testers of my product for a certain
period of time; and at the same moment, the results will be recorded and analysed to

5
prove its validity. I used the 1H5W mind map to help me sort out the subject specific
components I will be applying in my personal project (refer to appendix 4).

1.4 Impact to society and community

I believe that now in the 21st century, medical researchers have created many drugs
which can be immediately released into the bloodstream. Whether it is through injections
or through forms of pills or tablets, many people have succumbed to the idea that drugs
are always the answer as the results are clearer and take a shorter time to response to the
disease. However, when the human body keeps depending on interventions to recover, the
antibodies will become weakened thus making the individual more susceptible to diseases.
I hope that after the public sees my product, they will change their mind-set on drugs just
as how I have when I first discovered alternative medication back in 2010. This would
also encourage parents to teach their young ones how to self-medicate with natural
remedies instead of consulting a doctor every time they get a mild illness.

1.5 How the PP develops IB learner profile and ATL skills

At first I used the six thinking hats to critically evaluate how the IB learner profile and
ATL skills can aid or disrupt my flow in completing my personal project (refer to
appendix 5). Then, I drew out some of the IB learner profile and ATL skills that I will be
using throughout my personal project process.

IB Learner Profiles

Inquirers:

To complete my personal project, being an inquirer would be critical as I would first be

required to inquire questions in order to heighten my understanding based on the concepts
of how the human skin works as well as the nutrients needed to keep the epidermis layer
healthy. This IB learner profile would come in handy during interviews with a health
professional such as a doctor.

Communicators:

Whether information is in a written or verbal form, it is highly important that being a good
communicator is imminent. Without this learner profile, my product would not be viable

6
to the public audience as they wouldnt understand clearly the messages that I will be
trying to convey to them through a booklet regarding my product.

Open-minded:

I would have to take into account of other peoples religion and belief when it comes to
handling food stuffs. For instance, Muslims cannot consume pork while Hindu
worshippers cannot take beef. Therefore, to be on the safe side, I will be inputting a vegan-
based diet into my product so that I wouldnt be offending any religious or cultural beliefs.

ATL skills

Self-management:

This learner profile would be crucial if I were to plan on completing my PP on time. I

would first have to divide an adequate amount of time for each process throughout my
project such as research, analysing, concluding, etc. Then, I will be carrying out the
decided steps according to the targeted time and if it so happens to require more or less
times, I would then have to follow through with the contingency plans made earlier.

Research:

Most of the information that I will be gathering would come from tertiary sources such as
the internet; and knowing that this source is not necessarily a legit source, I would have to
personally analyse the information collected online and extract those which are proven to
be genuine. However, if I use books to do my research, I wouldnt have to analyse as the
authors are certified professionals in their field.

Thinking:

Basically, thinking skills will be the main ATL skills that I would have to use throughout
my whole PP project. From researching to transferring ideas onto papers or videos, this
skill would limitlessly be used even after I am done with the project, I would still have to
state the conclusions, summary, etc.

7
Investigating

8
2.0 Investigating

In the beginning, I decided to make a cleansing juice, also known as detox juice, to go
along with a workout schedule as the product of my personal project. I even collected
some data and information from a few resources such as the internet and books. In
addition to that, I even consulted a naturopathy certified doctor, Dr. Zawawi- as stated in
1.1- and asked him a few questions related to the product that I will be inventing.
However, I realised that this product was already in the market and therefore changed it to
a smoothie recipe targeting dry skin problems instead. Following the change, I continued
my researches through the internet and, occasionally, books. My findings were then
compared to a few different websites to approve its legitimacy.

2.1 Evaluation of sources

I drew out a table for easy reference on the sources I have relied on for
information to be inserted into my product (Refer to appendix 6).

9
Planning

10
3.0 Planning

In order to make the recipe for my smoothie, I would first have to obtain the
appropriate information, evaluate them and finally do a thorough information gathering on
the ingredients which I have selected for the recipe before I can start recording the test
subjects progresses on a lab report.

In order to ensure that my work is organised, complete and structured, I will be using
the smart goal, design specification, product specification and product criteria as seen in
appendix 7 to 12 below.

3.1 Setting goals

To ensure that my Personal Project goes smoothly as planned, I had to have a specific,
narrowed-down, goal that I want to achieve. Therefore, I have used the S.M.A.R.T. goals to
help me have a clearer goal which is to create a smoothie recipe to help cure dry skin
problems and maintain healthy skin in a duration of 6 months-time (refer to Appendix 7).
Besides that, I will have an additional lab report which I will be utilising throughout my test
subjects journey with my recipe. This lab report will include feedback from the test subjects-
both from their thoughts and accounts of my product and also from photographic or
examination evidence.

3.2 Design specifications

I created a design specification so that I can assure my product was not plagiarized
and has been invented and developed by me-and me only. The design specification would
give a more detailed explanation of how the end product would appear as well as who it was
meant for (refer to Appendix 8).

3.3 Product specification

In the beginning, I wasnt sure on how the product would look like once it is
completed. Therefore, I have created the product specification to help me achieve my
products targeted appearance in intricate detail complete with the booklets size, colour,
format, etc. (refer to Appendix 9).

11
3.4 Product criteria

After completing my Personal Project product, I will refer back to the product criteria
which I have created in order to help me ensure that I have come up with the best results
possible. Besides that, the product criteria will aid me in evaluating my product more
specifically in terms of the formats used to organize the contents of the product, the evidences
of the products effectiveness, etc. (refer to Appendix 10).

3.5 Booklet layout

My booklet will include 7 sections: the cover page, contents, introduction, main body,
lab report, closure and citations (refer to appendix 11). Anything below 20 pages would
suffice as, again, my aim for this booklet is to keep things as short and simple as possible.

I believe that the most challenging part of this task would be to keep my explanations
in the booklet short and easy to understand even though it has no word limit. Also I can
roughly guess that I would be a little later in submitting my product than the actual set date as
I will be facing some problems with my test subjects results. This would then, in turn, slow
down the process of me completing the lab report.

3.6 Timeline

I have created a Gantt chart to act as a reminder during the process of completing my
personal project. It will help me keep track of the progress I have made and the meetings I
have had with my supervisor. This way, I will be able to organize my time well and work
efficiently within the time-frame provided. (Refer to appendix 12)

12
Taking action

13
4.1 Product development

Before I started on the process of producing my product, I did a thorough research on

the smallest possible details of my product- even down to how I can fully utilise the materials
that I already have around the house. To start off, I first took a few weeks to do researches on
the topics regarding how nutrients affect the skin. The top websites which have helped me go
through this process were mostly from a website called webmd. Besides this website,
YouTube as well as a few other health websites were the main source of my basic research.
To ensure that the data and information which I have collected were valid and updated, I met
my fathers friend, Dr. Zawawi, who was a naturopathy doctor. I got some advice from him
regarding my data and what I should do further research on. He even lent me some of his
books which replaced the internet as my primary source of research. As I gradually built up
my research through sources such as the internet and books given to me by the doctor, I
occasionally met him on the weekends so that I can keep my work updated as well as to gain
newer information. All the data and information which I have collected were recorded in a
notebook and transferred into the lab report which I have made. Other information were
stored in a Microsoft word file.

4.2 Making the booklet.

During the process of making the booklet, I ensured that the main feature of the
product would be written in a concise manner- putting in mind that my target audience are
teenagers who tend to have low tolerance for long explanations. Before I could even start on
making the booklet, I first had to organize its contents and flow. For this process, it took me
only a day as I already had the basic idea of how to subtly approach the audience with
information. I came up with a timeline for which I was to follow until the booklet was
complete. The most essential requirement of the booklet making process would be to
critically think of and analyse the information sources which I have used to gather
information for the booklet. Also, after I have gained information on a certain piece of
information from a secondary source, I will verify its validity by communicating with a
doctor in order to gain a different perspective in case I have misinterpreted its facts. Once I
was done filling in the contents of my booklet, I collaborated with my mother in order to
proofread and delete any unnecessary points. During this process, communication was
essential as some of the points which my mother asked to delete were actually some of the
most important pieces of information in my booklet.

14
4.3 Product amendments

In the beginning, my product, the booklet, was supposed to have less than 50 pages
with an estimated number of 10,000 words. However, I only managed to use up 17 pages-
inclusive of the cover and back- and only 2,695 words. I decided that 50 pages would be a
little bit too extensive for a booklet considering the fact that the format of my contents are
based on a question or statement followed by a brief and direct explanation. Sometimes,
pictures are used to explain certain things as the teenage audience tend to be more visually
attracted. Therefore, I have decided that I can save my word count even further if I used
pictures to illustrate situations or objects rather than words- when in fact my original
intention of inserting pictures was just as a decorative feature. I have also changed the
background music to a slightly more upbeat music as my target audience are mostly teenagers.

4.4 Reflecting

Although my theory product has become a reality, I believe that there is still some
room for improvement. First of all, I think that my product lacks interesting features although
it is meant to be a factual booklet. For instance I should have tried to find test subjects who
are willing to keep a weekly photographic log. If I were to sell my current product- the
booklet- now, I think that not many people would have faith in the recipe as I have minimal
evidences of the recipe actually working on my test subjects. Furthermore, I think that my
cover is a quite drab and lacks colours. Initially I intended for it to look that way to achieve a
neat look. However, after having done it I somewhat regret my decision as it is highly
unattractive to the point where it is unattractive and discourages people from reading it.
Therefore, I would definitely change it to a manually designed cover page. I believe that with
longer experiment duration, I will be able to collect solid evidences which proves that my
product really works on people of every age- instead of just teenagers. Once I have done this,
I will patent my recipe and sell it as a legal product to my targeted customers in the form of a
booklet.

4.5 Relation of product to global context

My product has successfully fit into its global context which is scientific and technical
innovation. Its most important content, the recipe, requires ingredient which can be found in
the natural world. The months worth of research that has been carried out involves a
substantial amount of analytical thinking as well as approval from a board certified doctor. I

15
had to find out the root cause of eczema as well as its cure. With these two pieces of
information on hand, I started to come up with my own version of a natural eczema remedy.
To ensure that my theoretical product works, I experimented its effects on 3 test subjects- all
of which are teenagers. Weekly progresses were recorded, analysed and a conclusion was
drawn out in the form of a lab report. My product has also proved to contain no dairy or nut
allergens; thus making it perfect for almost anyone to use. With evidences that solidify the
ground of success with which my product stands on, I can confidently address my product as
a technical innovation with a valid scientific background.

4.6 Relation of product against reflective criteria

I would give myself a 7 for the contents. This is because the message was conveyed
extremely clearly and effectively with full understanding of the topic which was being
discussed. As for the use of language, I have only reached band 6 as I demonstrated no
grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors with a good flow of vocabulary choices.
However, I only used compound sentences to convey the message. 7 would be the perfect
score for the format of my contents as they are well organised, complete with paragraphs,
headings and titles as well as a consistent flow of contents and ideas. Also, the sentences are
effectively structured to bring a clear message to the audience. Lastly, evidences are well
structured and neatly organised by using charts, lab report, images and graphs assisted by a
clear explanation of the observations. However, I was not able to use scientific language
consistently. Hence, I will only give myself a 6 for this.

4.7 Target audience

As for my target audience, I decided that eczema patients ranging from 12 to 19

would be the perfect age group. This is because I noticed that the people from this particular
age group tend to have more time to read as compared to their adult counterparts. Eczema
appears more in adolescents and infants more than adults as many of them loose the condition
as they age therefore making them the perfect target audience.

16
Reflection

17
5.1 Reflection of the product

Before I started with my product, I first included a few pointers which I have
categorized under the planning stage. They include: S.M.A.R.T. Goals, design specification,
product specification and product criteria. Therefore, I have used the 5 mediums of creation
to evaluate the quality of my product (refer to appendix 13).

All in all, I think that my product has been successful in fulfilling its main aim which
is to cure eczema without the use of drugs. Not only that, my product is now able to raise
awareness and prove that natural remedies have healing properties without adverse side
effects that normal drugs usually do. Besides its main purpose, eczema patients can now
understand their condition in more depth than before. They will also be able to read a full lab
report of 3 real-life eczema patients and observe how their skin reacts to sufficient amounts
of nutrients.

Providing images alongside information is crucial as readers are often clueless about
the terms used when reading a medical book. By adding in images alongside information, I
have essentially made the reader have a clearer understanding of the topic being discussed.
Also, the short and simple sentences used in the booklet allows the readers to grasp new
information more efficiently in less time.

5.2 Understanding the topic

The main reason why I chose to write a book on my very own drug-free eczema
curing recipe is because I realized that teenagers (target audience) these days often depend
too much on medication to cure every disease they have. By writing this book, I am actually
proving to them that remedies do work albeit they are slower and less effective. Nonetheless,
natural ingredients can help build up the immune system unlike drugs which not only give a
one-time cure but also weaken the immune system in the long run.

In my booklet titled Eczema and its remedy, I have included some basic information
regarding eczema such as its appearance, type, trigger, etc. What was most interesting is that
I included photographic evidence from actual test subjects in order to give teens a solid proof
that my all-natural recipe does actually work. Before that, I first have explained the science
behind my recipe. This way, the audience reading my booklet will be able to understand their
condition through a detailed biological and chemistry layout as well as understand the dos
and donts of treating their eczema-affected areas.

18
5.3 Understanding the global context: scientific and technical innovation

By writing this booklet, I am not only spreading the knowledge of alternative

medication. I am unconsciously informing my readers that they can help reduce (if not
stopping) animal cruelty as all the ingredients in my product are fruits and water.
Furthermore, I am subconsciously informing my audience that they do not have to buy
products such as commercial fruit juices to cure their eczema. This way they are not only
saving money but also raw materials such as tin, paper or plastic needed to make the drinks
packaging. Now that my product has been proven to work, teenagers worldwide have a
chemical-free alternative. They can reap the benefits of my drug-free recipe even if they are
vegetarians or are allergic to dairy or nuts.

5.4 Strengths

Throughout the whole of my personal project process, I have discovered and acquired
quite a handful of strengths. One of my main strengths was actually the part where I had to
brainstorm for an idea on what to do for my personal project. To me this was easy as I have
already been anticipating the personal project since I was in grade 10. I rounded up some
possible topics to act on and slowly did fundamental researches on the candidate topics
before I finally chose to write a booklet regarding eczema and its remedy for teens during the
summer holidays. This way, my chosen topic would not be one selected as a last minute
resort. Instead, it is one that I truly felt interest in.

One of my other strengths is that I did not have to struggle during the process of
making the booklet itself. This was because I have already gathered the necessary
information that I needed to insert into the booklet during my final month is Grade 10. I had
full access to all three primary, secondary and tertiary sources: a naturopathy doctor, eczema-
related book (Eczema Free for Life written by M.D. Adnan Nasir) and the internet.
Materialising the book was a breeze as I do not have any trouble with the English language
whether it is the grammar, punctuation, etc.

5.5 Weaknesses

Looking back at my Personal Project process, I discovered that my main weaknesses

are often related to time management. For instance, I did not know how to estimate how
much time to divide for certain sections of my project. Taking the lab report section of my
product for example, it is observable that my observation period was rushed. Usually medical

19
observations required a minimum of 3 months to qualify as a successful observational period
but I was not aware of this and shortened the time frame to merely just a month. Although I
was still able to collect sufficient data, I believe that if I had allowed more time to be given to
the observing stage, I would have been able to collect more accurate data.

One of my other weaknesses was that I was not proficient in updating my process
journal. I kept forgetting to update it and when I did, it is often a few days after I have done
the activity. By this time my memory is no longer fresh on the progress I have made and is
mainly the reason why I did not attempt to record it down in the process journal. To make
matters worse, every time I had new ideas I would write them down on sticky notes or in my
planner as it did not strike as important for me to jot it down in my process journal.

I also had some trouble with the tools I used to add animations to the booklet (my
product). I had never used Microsoft PowerPoint to make my very own images. This had
caused me to waste some of my time just so that I can get accustomed to the tools available.

5.6 Reflection on Learning and Development as an IB Learner

Throughout the entirety of completing my Personal Project, I have been able to

acquire new skills through the extensive researches I have done on the topic that I chose out
of pure interest. Not only that, I have been able to hone my skills and broaden my view on
eczema and alternative medication. This project has not only in definitively improved my
writing skills but also as a better IB learner with a broader perspective on real-life medical
conditions affecting millions around the globe.

At first, what drove me to invent a cure for eczema patients is that I honestly felt pity
towards eczema patients. Being one of them myself, I realized just how discomforting it was
to go through a day with a constant burning itch at the eczema-affected areas. What was
worse was that it can be quite embarrassing when the need to itch was unbearable in public.
The public would simply stare with disgust towards eczema patients as they lack awareness
of what the patient is suffering. This motivated me even more to write a booklet on a drug-
free cure for eczema so that patients no longer need to buy expensive medication or consume
drugs for the sake of curing their eczema.

As I dove deeper into my projects development, I made progress in becoming more

open minded. This was because eczema affected people regardless of race and religion. Some
of them could not consume meat while others are allergic to certain food items. Taking this

20
into account, I made sure that my eczema recipe did not consist of any meat, dairy or nuts to
avoid possible religious prohibitions or allergy triggers.

Although I had to go through a number of hiccups along the way of completing this
personal project, I was thrilled at the idea of being given the opportunity to delve deeper into
my two most beloved science subjects: biology and chemistry.

All in all, I realized that this personal project does not only push students to produce a
product and record its creation process but also enables ones mind to develop in acquiring
new knowledge and develop a sense of open-mindedness, respect and care for others
believes and background.

No. Source Research method Evaluation

1. Dr. Zawawi Primary (interview) I have decided it best if I interviewed a
naturopathy doctor to gain some
valuable information as he has been
specializing in the field for over 2
decades. He has had some personal
experience with eczema as his children
have it too therefore making him a
highly reliable source of information.

2. Eczema free for life Secondary (book) This book was written by M.D. Adnan
Nasir who is one of the leading
dermatologists in the USA. The
information in his book are very
detailed and therefore is the top source
of information which I rely on next to
the ones I have gained from the
interview mentioned earlier.

3. webmd.com Secondary (online) webmd.com has provided me with

some valid information regarding the
science of antioxidants and the human
skin. Because this website is written by
doctors but can be modified by the
public, I relied very little on this
source.

4. YouTube Secondary (online) I only relied on videos uploaded by the

Dr. Oz account. His information are
valid as he is a certified medical doctor
and has a television show of his own.
The videos he uploaded on YouTube
are actually excerpts of his television
show.

written in point form.
Therefore, I dont see the
need for such a big booklet
size. Also, the booklet was
designed to be small so that it
is handy and light-weight.

Paper colour White Because this colour is known

to be a neutral colour, any
writings or illustrations
would be contrast to the
booklets white background.

Font size 24 and 12 Knowing that my target

audience would be teenagers,
size 12 font would be
suitable for them as most of
them are able to see the
words clearly. The titles on
the other hand, will be typed
in font size 24 so that it is
distinguishable.

Font colour Black Since the background is

white while the pictures are
multi-coloured, the only
logical colour for the font
would be black as it would
be clear to read.

Font type Times New Roman This font is widely used in

the written materials industry
and would therefore give the
readers a more familiar
feeling when they read the
booklet.

Number of pages 17 pages The main aim of making the

booklet is to keep things
short and simple. So, to
explain about the product and
recipe, I think that only 17
pages would suffice.

31
Picture sizes Varies Picture sizes would vary
depending on how much
space is available after all the
typing process has been
completed as pictures are not
very important.
Picture colour Multi-coloured To attract the audiences
attention, I will be using
multi-colour for the images
so that the booklet wouldnt
be too drab and somewhat
boring.

Picture positioning Middle and sides Important pictures would be

in the middle as too attract
the audiences attention
while the images on the side
are meant to accompany the
information stated beside it.
