Unit Topic: Government


Lesson Topic: Government Responsibilities/Federal Election Process
Grade Level: 9
Lesson Duration: 66 minutes

Learning Objectives/Outcomes
o Students will spend the first five minutes of class completing a short quiz
related to Fridays lesson.
o Students will listen to a PowerPoint lecture on the Canadian election process
and be required to record notes using their fill in the blanks sheet.
o Students will spend the remainder of class working on/finishing up an
assignment on government responsibilities (This assignment was distributed
at the end of last class).

Social Skill Objectives


o Students will be asked and encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions
throughout the PowerPoint lecture.
o Students will only raise their hands if they have a constructive question.
o Students will be expected to remain quiet while they are completing their
assignment.

Learning Resources
o PowerPoint presentation (composed by the teacher).
o Short videos related to the federal election process (from YouTube)
o Government Responsibilities Assignment (see Attachment 1)

Lesson Procedures
o Surprise Quiz 5 minutes
o PowerPoint lecture 30-35 minutes
o Government Responsibilities Assignment- 25 minutes

Assessment/Evaluation
o Could students recall some of the major points discussed in Fridays lesson?
(Assess Quiz).
o Could students comprehend the content that was discussed throughout the
PowerPoint lecture? (Assess on upcoming unit test and during upcoming
mock election).
o Could students manage their in-class work time wisely and produce an
assignment that demonstrates effort and understanding of the topic (Teacher
Observation; Assess Government Responsibilities Assignment).

Learning Style Differences


o Auditory learners (listening to teacher elaborate on PowerPoint notes-
students can pick out important information while teacher is elaborating).
o Visual learners (PowerPoint including text and images; Short Videos).
o Intrapersonal learners (students will complete their Government
Responsibilities Assignment individually).
