English is not spelled phonetically. The same sound is spelled several different
ways. For this reason it is helpful to assign seprate symbols to each sound. The
follnwing is the International Phonetic Alphabet CIPA system. Twenty-four (24)
consonant symbols, eleven (11) vowel symbols, and five (5) symbols representing
diphthmgs are used to represent the significant sounds of American English.
These charts are only aids and not to be memorized. However, the sludents must
be aware of the different sounds representad in these charts. They must be able
to recognizc and repeat them accurately.
