25th /26th February 2017 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,

Trusting God is the central theme in todays readings. The reading

of Isaiah were words of consolation and hope spoken while the Israelite
people were in captivity and exiles in Babylon. Those words are for us
too. St Paul reminds us that only God can judge correctly, because he alone knows the secrets of
our hearts. St Matthew records the message of Jesus, who urges us to place ourselves in Gods
hands, because we are known, created and loved by him. We are precious in Gods eyes.

People often ask: Where is God in all this suffering in our world; while people lives,
children, women and men are destroyed by war and starvation; while people are evicted from their
homes to become refugees; while there is political instability amongst nations it is not so easy to
trust in a God who cares!

Yet, this is what our Christian faith is about. The world is still a beautiful place, in spite of
the mess we are making of it by wars, rumours of wars; hate between races and religious This was
exactly why Jesus came to save the world. He came 2,000 years ago and he still needs to come into
our hearts, our lives, our relationships with one another, at home and abroad. The love of God as
shown in the life and ministry of Jesus is the bond that can hold us together in spite of and in the
middle of whatever chaos may be about us.

THANKS to all who have participated in the Day with St John Vianney. In due course we
will be able to give observations on the day itself.

PASTORAL LETTER: Cardinal Vincent has sent us a Pastoral Letter today Called to
Serve the Sick. He is asking us to focus on the corporal works of mercy; caring for the sick
This means that our caring for the sick arises from our faith in God and is most fully completed
when it takes its shape from that faith. (Please take a copy of the Pastoral Letter)

TRIP TO TURKEY, DIYARBAKIR and ISTANBUL: It is great to be part of the 3rd Imrali
Delegation. While we were not allowed to visit Abdullah Ocalan, the Kurdish leader imprisoned
since 1999, we were able to meet with so many groups. We met lawyers, journalists, Human Rights
workers, trade unionists etc. All telling the same story how they were imprisoned, tortured and
humiliated. All because they were Kurdish and not allowed to speak their own language, etc. most
were targeted because they were falsely accused of being either a member of a supporter of an
illegal organisation. It was all a very sad state of affairs. (See my report)

LENT begins on Ash Wednesday. We pray that God will bless us in all our efforts during
this holy season. Please try to so something extra this Lent.

That is all for now, have a good week. Fr Joe
