Welcome families!
We consider your childs classroom to be a home
away from home and our goal is to make your
childs second home as healthy and safe as we
can. This newsletter includes information on our
safety procedures as well as how we maintain a
healthy environment in our classroom. Our hope is
that this information will help put your mind at ease.
Creating a Sanitary Environment
1. Hand Washing. Hand washing is by far the best
way to prevent germs from spreading throughout
the classroom and center. We require frequent
hand washing at the following times:
As children arrive
After playing outside
Before and after eating/touching food
After blowing nose and/or coughing
After using the restroom
Research has proven the importance of teaching
children proper hand washing techniques from a
young age. We thank you for your cooperation in
helping to teach proper santiary techniques to your
child.
2. Food preparation. Our center ensures that while
preparing food, our staff maintains a sanitary
environment. As mentioned above, hand washing is
important in the classroom especially before meal
time and is practiced by both teachers and
children. Also the surface that food is prepared on
as well as our tables are proprely santized with
bleach water. Teachers wear gloves while
preparing and serving food. By following these
guidelines we ensure a sanitary environment for
food preparation.
3. Daily Santizing. In our classroom we want to
ensure all surfaces as well as toys are santizied. At
the end of the day toys are sprayed with bleach
water, and then weekly these toys are put though
the centers santizier. All dress-up clothes, stuffed
animals, and pillows/cot sheets are put in the
washer weekly. Also all surfaces are sprayed with
bleach water before and after meal-times and also
after group activities.

Food-Related Emergencies
Food related emergencies include allergic
reactions, choking, or other medical emergencies.
All of our staff as been CPR and first aid certified by
the local fire department. There are also center
procedures in place if an emergency were to arise.
For more information on our procedures please
contact the centers director. It is also important to
note that in each classroom there are necessary
materials to handle emergency situations.
Allergies. In terms of prevention, allergies are
posted for other teachers to view in order to
ensure the childs safety. If your child has an
allergy please make sure the center has a copy
of their Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis
Emergency Care Plan, which can be obtained
from your pediatrician. Also make sure the
center has any medications necessary to treat
an allergric reaction.
Choking/CPR. Again it is important to emphasize
the staff at our center is CPR and first aid
certified. Our staff must go through re-
certification every two years.
Emergency Forms. Upon registering you
received an emergency form that is required to
be completed before your childs first day. These
forms provide teachers with critical information
during an emergency such as: emergency
contact information, medical conditions,
allergies, insurance information, and
pediatrician contact information.

 Supporting Family Food Preferences and
Practices

Our center strives to show respect and understanding for

others cultural practices and preferences. However, in
order for us to provide the best possible care for your child
we need your help. As educators we understand that
parents/families know their child best and we want that
knowledge to be passed on to us. Every family has their
own values and beliefs and we want those values and
beliefs to be represented and respected in our classroom.
Once we know and better understand your familys needs,
preferences, and practices, we will do our best to ensure
they are respected, followed, and reinforced. Possible
areas in which food issues may arise include birthday
snacks, activities/lessons involving food, and also food
served during field trips. Please let us know if there are any
dietary restrictions we should be aware of such as
vegetarian, vegan, dairy free, gluten free, nut free, etc.
We will do our best to accommodate your childs needs
and preferences you simply need to let us know.

The Community Health Care Clinic offers free quality health care for those who qualify. The clinic
is located in Normal and is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

OSF St. Joesph Medical Center has three off-site walk-in clincs that provide quality health care
when your primary physician is busy or not availble.
