THE ROLE OF MOVIES
Over the last 100 years the film industry has gone to great lengths to appeal
to a wide range of audiences, from the most demanding cult movie fans to the more
commercial mass market. The same year can see the release of major productions
destined to become box-office hits such as King Kong (2005) as well as lesser-known
masterpieces like Woody Allen's Match Point (2005).
Perhaps in no other creative art form can we find such a variety of different
genres. There are almost as many of these as there are human emotions - hilarious
comedies, thrilling mysteries, exhilarating adventures, sad and moving dramas ...
Each reflects the development of our societies through the decades. Certain movies
bear witness to specific events of historical importance (Apollo 13, 1995) or show, for
example, how extreme ideologies can lead to terrible carnage, war or holocaust
(Schindler's List, 1993).
Technological innovation - from silent to speaking movies, from black and white to
colour, from celluloid to digital - has provided each generation of film directors with
new creative possibilities. In addition, the flexibility of the film as an art form - from
realism to more artistic or allegorical approaches - has enabled and inspired film
makers to portray their stories and characters in ever more complex ways.
As a result, a successful movie is equally capable of recreating the past
(Gladiator, 2000), depicting the present (Bowling for Columbine, 2002) or even
envisaging what the world will be like in the future (Artificial Intelligence, 2002).
The cinema-going public is presented with more and more stunning photography,
evocative soundtracks and, once in a while, brilliant acting to talk about and
remember. Not in vain have the movies been called 'the industry of dreams'.
