The Quadriplegic Association was established in 2003 under the auspices of the
QuadPara Association of South Africa. Its mission is to role out vision, opportunity
and success for quadriplegics and paraplegics. Furthermore, we provide essential
services and products thus encouraging healthy and productive lifestyles amongst our
disabled members. We lobby with Government and the private sector highlighting
the uniqueness and plight of persons with mobility impairments and also encourage
efficient and progressive legislation.

INTRODUCTION
During the inaugural wheelchair race in 2006 we have accomplished our mission by
generating enthusiasm and camaraderie amongst disabled and able-bodied
individuals. Furthermore, the wheelchair race visibly demonstrated the positive
consequence that social interaction is able to achieve amongst disabled and able-
bodied persons. Our utmost goal is to significantly grow the wheelchair race in 2008
by intensifying our marketing and awareness approach. The 2008 wheelchair race
promises to be pleasurable rather than a gruelling event thus enticing greater appeal.
This year we are incorporating a fun walk into proceedings thus demonstrating our
intention to intensify awareness concerning the plight and uniqueness of persons with
mobility impairments. The funds generated from this initiative will enable us to
address the ever increasing need for assistive devices i.e. power wheelchairs,
lightweight aluminium wheelchairs, transfer hoists, standing wheelchairs and pressure
care products. All sectors of society have been extremely high-spirited during the
2006 wheelchair race in terms of their financial and proactive involvement.
Therefore, we yet again anticipate a successful and exhilarating partnership with Shell
Ultra-City (Kimberley) and Pick ‘n Family Supermarket (Rhodesdene).

Wheelchair race / fun walk concept

The 2008 wheelchair race will cover a distance of ten (10) kilometres and the fun
walk will consist of a five (5) and ten (10) kilometres event from Pick ‘n Pay Family
Supermarket (Rhodesdene) to Shell Ultra-City (Kimberley N12). The five (5)
kilometres fun walk will start at the halfway point as stipulated on the route map,
which is attached to this document. The wheelchair race will precede the fun walk.
The five (5) kilometres entrants will commence their race as soon as the 10 (ten)
kilometres entrants arrive at their starting point. In other words, the fun walk will
commence behind wheelchair race. A maximum of twenty (20) teams, comprising of
Government departments, the Private sector, Social groups will be attracted to
participate in the wheelchair race event. Each team will comprise of six members.
En route, we’ll have four (4) water/relay points where wheelchair race competitors
will make a compulsory substitution. One team member will push another for a
distance of two (2) kilometres before effecting a substitution. Each team will be
compelled to contribute Three Thousand Rand (R3, 000.00) as entrance fee. The fun
walk will be an uncomplicated event merely requiring a small entrance fee. Scholars
will be requested to contribute Ten Rand (R10.00) whereas adults will contribute
Twenty Rand (R20.00). The event Sponsors will be requested to contribute a
minimum of R10, 000.00.

Publicity CAMPAIGN
MEDIA: The print media is undoubtedly one of the most powerful means of
publicity. This is an extremely costly channel thus we require media sponsors.
We will adopt a two-fold approach in securing media sponsors. The first
approach would be to request free advertising from the print media. Secondly,
we will approach business to sponsor individual advertisements. The following
newspaper and magazine agencies will be utilized: DFA, Noord-Kaap, Volksblad,
Beeld, Sports Unlimited, Rolling Inspiration (lifestyle magazine for persons with
mobility impairments). Radio is another important and expensive medium of
publicity. The same sponsorship routine will be employed for Radio as a
publicity medium. OFM in Bloemfontein and Radio Teemaneng in Kimberley
will be the broadcasters of choice. We will plea our case with both broadcasters
and also request that OFM avail its Outside Broadcasting Unit on the day of the
event. The Publicity Campaign will commence at least one month prior to the
event or in accordance to the event sponsors.

POSTER & BANNERS: We will request that POLEADD allow us place posters
and banners on street poles throughout Kimberley. Large banners will be
strategically erected in the CBD to maximise advertising. We will also distribute
flyers at schools and in neighbourhoods.
SECONDARY SPONSORS
Secondary Sponsors will comprise of product and financial support including in-store
competitions.

Products: We will request T-shirts from clothing manufacturers and stores.

The event logo and relevant information will be printed on the T-shirts and
will thus be used as a promotional source. We will obtain official food &
beverage suppliers i.e. soft drinks, energy drinks, water & food. The
beverages will be distributed at water points. The marshals and volunteers
will be supplied with food & beverages.

Financial support: Obtain addition financial support from SMME to

maximise income. The four water points will be sold for R1500.00 each.

In-Store Competitions: The two event sponsors i.e. Pick ‘n Pay Family
Supermarket and Shell Ultra City will have in-store competitions as a means
of maximising income. Raffle tickets will be sold at least three (3) months
prior to the wheelchair race and fun walk.
