SWBAT recognize where their evidence can be listed and explained due to transitional phrases
SWBAT look back on their writing to ensure they use the correct starting and ending transitions

Lesson Introduction: (10-15 min)

(Activate background knowledge & set purpose)

I will start by having the class come to the back rug. I will ask the class who has ever heard of the word
transition before? Students will raise their hands and give examples such as about going different places in
school or moving on to the next subject. I will explain how with every paragraph we need to ensure with every
new paragraph we need to wrap up the paragraph before moving on. I will refer back to my example from
yesterdays lesson on being ready, respectful, and responsible. I explain how I started each body paragraph by
explaining how I used Another reason, my second reason, or Lastly in each of my paragraphs to start. I
will ask my students whether they think it would make sense to continue the sentence with the paragraph before
and whether each student agrees. I will call on a student who said no that it doesnt make sense and ask why
they think that. Once the students hear why others believe they wouldnt make sense to continue and why they
are needed to start a new part or section of their writing I will hand out a page of transition words. On the page
the students will have options they can use of phrases along with sections of where to use them in each
paragraph. Then I will have them return to their desks with their writers notebooks and writers folder.
Activities/Procedures: (10-15 min)

Lesson Plans are conducive to student achievement and focus on PA State CC standards and objectives

Students will look back on what they already have to notice if they included transition words and whether or not
they have used them appropriately. Students will then continue their persuasive writing to continue writing
about what they like best or what is the best. Students will place their transition phrases sheet in their writing
folders to refer back to, if needed.

Closing& Assessment: (10 min)

I will go around and assist each student to ensure they are staying on task and making progress with their
writing. For those that are or have had trouble with their writing from the previous day I will start with them to
help give them form their writing to the best of their ability. When writing is over (11am) I will announce to the
class to find a good stopping point and to return their notebooks and writing folders, with their transition phrase
sheet back in the bin and get ready for reading.
