Critical Inquiry Question: Where and how did the Renaissance Spread?
Lesson: Spreading of ideas Time: 60 minutes
SLOs:
. 8.2.1 appreciate how Renaissance Europe formed the basis for the worldview of

. 8.2.2 demonstrate a willingness to consider differing beliefs, values and

. 8.2.3 recognize how beliefs and values are shaped by time, geographic location

8.2.4 examine, critically, the factors that shaped the worldview evolving in
western Europe during the Renaissance by exploring and reflecting upon the
following questions and issues:
. What was the Renaissance? (TCC, LPP)
. How did the Renaissance spark the growth and exchange of ideas and
knowledge across Europe (ie. Astronomy, mathematics, science, politics,
religion, and arts?

Lesson Objectives:
Students will...
1. Discuss how the spread of the Renaissance to the analogy about pouring water
on the floor by answering questions related to the textbook.
2. Identify that not all ideas spread equally during the Renaissance, and even the
Renaissance itself did not spread equally.

Preparation:
- Print worksheet 2.2

Lesson Procedure:
Introduction (6 minutes)
Time Attendance

- Remind students they need to come see me in tutorial if they want to improve
their marks

Discussion (think-pair-share 2-3 minutes for each)
- If I poured water on the floor, would everything get wet? Why? Why not?
o Answers can include:
Sometimes other things are in the way
Sometimes they are too high for the water to reach
The water might not be deep enough to get all the way across the
room
Some things are made of substances which are waterproof
They may get wet but not absorb it
- End discussion with ---- This, in a way, is like the ideas of the Renaissance. The
ideas or water spreads but doesnt reach everywhere, or are blocked, or are not
absorbed by all.

Read pages 50-51 together
- Discuss the map at the bottom of page 50
- What modern countries are here?
o Bring up a world map on the board for students to see/visually compare

Hand out/ work on Worksheet 2.2
- If students are working well have them work with their elbow partner to
complete
o Teacher move around classroom and help struggling readers/students
If students finish take up answers as a group

o Examples can talk about geographical barriers, feudalism, war, religion

- Main idea of today is to know that not all ideas spread equally or to the same
place
- Have one student explain how pouring water and spreading of ideas is the same
- REMINDER: Tomorrow is the last day to get your test signed or its Friday
