1. Discuss the character of Romeo and his infatuation with Rosaline. Does this weaken the credibility
of the love he feels for Juliet? Why or why not?

Romeo & Juliet.

3. Mercutio is considered to be one of Shakespeares great creations, yet he is killed relatively early in
the play. What makes Mercutio so memorable a character?

4. Examine the role of women in Romeo & Juliet. Compare and contrast with the role of women in
Persepolis.

5. Juliets suitor Paris is compared throughout the play to Romeo. Examine carefully the similarities
and differences between the two young men who love Juliet.

Essay Options:
1. The prince decrees at the end of the play that some people will be pardoned and that others will be punished.
Who is at fault for the deaths of Romeo & Juliet? Choose the character that you think is most responsible for
the deaths of these lovers. Support your answer with the text.
2. How is the world of the young people in the play (Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt), different from
the world of their parents and mentors? In what ways do the young adopt the beliefs of the old, and in what
ways do they ignore them or fight against them? Should Romeo & Juliet relationship be viewed as a rebellion
of the young against the old?
3. Motifs of light and darkness run through the play. How do these references to day and night, sun, moon and
stars, torches and lightning provide metaphors for what happens in the play? What kind of feelings do these
images arouse in the reader?
