5th Grade website :excelsiorlionsgohigh.weebly.com

These taco truck projects look AMAZING!!! This week, we are continuting our study of volume,
and capacity and discussing the real-world applications of each. Ask your student where they see
examples of volume and capacity being necessary and how those measurements might be acquired
and used!

Last week, we began our study of The Narrative of Frederick Douglaas, An American Slave.
This is a very poignant and historically significant text, and our reading is leading to excellent
discussion in our classrooms! Make sure to check in with your student frequently about the
chapters, the quesitons that they have answered in class, and their thoughts in general on the
historical subject matter. I hope that you are having some rich, thought-provoking discussions at
home as well!

We are half-way through our study on Westward Expansion Before The Civil War. Ask your
student what they have learned about the colonization of the The New World, and how it started
becoming The United States as we know it today!

We are finishing our study of chemistry with a biographical study of Dr.Percy Lavon Julian-
ask your student about their biography pamphlet and what they have learned about this
important scientist! We will be beginning our unit on the interdependence of plants and
animals (ecosystems) when we conclude our study of Dr. Julian.

* Please see the homework calendar on the website for this weeks details.
* Students should be working for no longer than 40 minutes per subject, per night. If you or your student
reaches a frustration point OR you are unclear of what needs to be done for the work, please send us an email
so that we can help your student first thing the next morning.
* Homework is only excused with a parent note.

would love for whoever can make it, to join us for our wax museum presentations of poetry
from Black poets whose work continues to speak about the lives of Black people everywhere,
especially in North America. We will host this as a breakfast event- hopefully allowing more
families to participate before heading to work. Be on the lookout for these details to come home
this week!*

**REQUESTS**

- We are running low on tissues and request that each 5th grader bring in one box to carry us
through the end of the year.

- We are also still in need of papertowels- we like to keep our work and eating areas clean
and germ free!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPLIES YOU ALL SENT IN LAST WEEK!!!
