WHY WE SING
Singing is not mere talent.
Thinking that singing is only a talent
denies a basic human need--to express
emotions in a way that completely
satisfies ones body, mind & spirit.
God has given each one of us the gift of
song. And he is present whenever we
sing his praises.
WHY WE SING
SNGING IS PERSONAL AND COMMUNAL
Unless music sounds, it is not music, and
whenever it sounds, it reaches others.
Song has both an individual and a
communal dimension.
Thus, it is no wonder that singing
together in church expresses so well
Gods presence to his people.
SINGING IS TWICE PRAYING
THE ROLE OF MUSIC MINISTERS
Week after week, we sing hymns to God
with joy in our hearts. Singing during
Mass strengthens our faith when it grows
weak and draws us into prayer.
Faith grows when it is well expressed in
the celebration of the Mass. Good
celebrations can nourish faith. Poor
celebrations may weaken it. Good music
makes community prayer more alive so
everyone can praise God more
powerfully, more intently and more
effectively.

ROLE #1
PROVIDE MUSIC FOR THE LITURGY OR
SACRAMENTAL WORSHIP
THE MUSIC in the liturgy must fulfill a
dual purpose: the glorification of God and
the sanctification of the faithful.
THE FOCUS must be THE LITURGY. The
music must enhance the Liturgy.
ROLE #2
ENCOURAGE THE CONGREGATION TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE LITURGY
Participation must be INTERNAL. We aim
to move the congregation to participate
actively as they unite themselves
interiorly to what the choir is singing, so
that by listening to the choir, they may
raise their minds to God.

The pastoral judgment takes into
consideration the actual community
gathered to celebrate in a particular
place at a particular time.
Factors such as the age, culture, and
language of the congregation must be
considered.
We ask: Will this song draw this
congregation closer to the mystery of
Christ, which is at the heart of this
liturgical celebration?
MUSICAL JUDGMENT
We ask if the song has the necessary
aesthetic qualities that can bear the
weight of the mysteries celebrated in the
Liturgy. It asks the question: Is this
composition technically, aesthetically,
and expressively worthy?
This judgment requires musical
competence. Only artistically sound
music will be effective and endure over
time.
