University of Notre Dame’s outdated email system was not living up to the reliability
standards expected by the campus community, and no longer adequately supported
requirements for efficient, dependable communication. Furthermore, its functions
stopped at email – and the school wanted a solution for campus-wide calendaring
and scheduling. Students were increasingly unsatisfied, and appealed to university

Case Study: Google Enterprise Search
Vanderbilt University needed to provide more relevant results for the growing number
of users of its website. While an existing solution had been in place, it just wasn’t meeting
the requirement for greater relevancy as well as scale. In such a knowledge focused
institution, providing fast, relevant search results was an essential requirement of such an
important public interface as the university website. Moreover, coverage was key; as part
of the vendor selection process, the Google Search Appliance (GSA) returned five times
more documents than the next closest supplier. Within a short time of deploying the GSA,
users were able to quickly access more relevant results.

Case Study: Google Security and Compliance
Fordham University’s email servers were being crushed under the growing volume of
spam, slowing email delivery to a halt and impacting performance and productivity for
their 30,000 students, faculty, and staff. They wanted a flexible solution that would not
require any onsite software or hardware, was easy to deploy, and required minimal ongoing
maintenance for their small IT team. Google Apps security and compliance products,
powered by Postini, now enables Fordham University to focus on academics instead of
spam. Since implementing Google Message Filtering, the performance of their email sys-
tem has greatly improved while lowering the number of calls to the university’s help desk
by 99% and also reducing the amount of time IT staff spends monitoring and maintaining
spam-related issues. Because Google Message Filtering requires no internal hardware or
software, Fordham’s IT staff has been able to focus on keeping its network and systems
functioning properly rather than on fighting fires.

Case Study: Google Earth and Maps
Researching ancient cultures and land from thousands of miles away can be difficult,
especially when working with 30 international researchers. The Digital Archaeological
Atlas of the Holy Land (DAAHL) project – led by professors and researchers at ASU and
UCSD – solved this problem by using Google’s mapping products when creating their
digital atlas of archaeological sites in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, southern Lebanon, Syria,
and the Sinai Peninsula. Using Google Maps and the Google Earth API, tens of thousands
of recorded archaeological sites from the region – from remote prehistoric periods to the
early 20th century – are entered into a comprehensive database along with site maps,
photographs, and artifacts. Researchers and academics can access, search, and explore
this data in 3D with a time-perspective, all enabled by Google Earth and Maps.
