Defense. Retrieved from http://breakingdefense.com/2015/11/us-steadily-retreating-in-
south-china-sea-dispute/
This source is about the U.S. calling its troops/navy back from the South China Sea due
to concern of their safety. This helps with my topic, because it proves how aggressive
China has been in international waters that it has claimed as its own. It also shows how
the U.S. Is concerned for its navys safety.

China Warns U.S. It Could Spark War With Provocative Acts in South China Sea. (2015,

This source is about how China has aggressively claimed its jurisdiction of the South
China Sea, how China plans to react with military action if they feel threatened and also
how China warned the U.S. That if it intervenes anymore, a war will break out. This will
help me to determine the possible consequences of my topic and how the world might be
affected if or when a war breaks out between the U.S. And China.

South-China-Sea-threatens-the-us-html
This source is about how China is rapidly modernizing and expanding its military and
how it is becoming a threat to the U.S.-especially on the dispute of the South China Sea.
This helps to understand that China will be able to protect its waters (that aren't really its
own) against even the U.S. And how that is a threat to the U.S. And surrounding countries
who hold jurisdictional claims of the region as well.

aggression/
This source is mainly about how China's presence in the South China Sea is concerning
for the U.S. And how the Washington visit with Chinese officials went. This helps me
understand how China feels that the man-made islands are for the benefit of the public (or
so they say).

N/A. (2016, February 7). South China Sea Dispute: U.S. Attacks China Militarisation.

why China believes that exploiting the South China Sea will benefit its citizens.

Page, J. Lee, C.E. & Lubold, G. (2015, September 25). China's President Pledges No
Militarisation in Disputed Islands. Retrieved from the Washington Post:
http://www.wsn.com/articles/China-completes-runway-on-artificial-island-in-south-
China-Sea-1443184818
This source is about how the Chinese President has assured the U.S. That it will not
militarize the South China Sea. This helps me to prove how China is lying and that they
have done the exact opposite of this in the spratlys islands.

Scuitto, J. & Hunt, K. (2015, October 27). China Says it Warned and Tracked U.S. Warship in
South China Sea. CNN. Retrieved from http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/27/Asia/us-China-
south-China/Sea/
This source is about how a U.S. Navy warship was within an area that would be
considered Chinese sovereign territory if the U.S. Recognized the man-made islands as
Chinese territory and how China warned the U.S. This helps with my topic by providing
China's aggressive threats in the South China Sea and by showing the different opinions
of the U.S. And China on this topic -it also shows how China believes the U.S. To be
hypocritical.

Uhrmacher, K., Schaul, K. & Denyer, S. (2015, September 11). Photos China's Rapid
Island-Building Strategy Continues. Retrieved from the Washington Post:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/world/south-China/Sea/
This source is about how China sees these international waters as its own and it explains
the territorial claims of the waters. It also shows the process of how and where the
artificial islands are built. This helps me to understand the process of the island
constriction in the South China Sea and how the dispute tensions could/will be raised
during the U.S. visit by the Chinese President.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. (ND). Retrieved from
http://www.un.org/depts/los/convention_agreements/texts/unclos/unclos_e.pdf

how China is wrong.

building-in-the-South-China-Sea.html?_r=1
This source is basically about how fast China is able to build its man-made islands, how
it is straining geopolitical tensions and how it is a danger to nearby marine life. This helps
me to understand just how rapidly China is building these artificial islands and how they
are endangering the ecosystems in the ocean.

Glazer, B. (2012, April.). Armed Clash in the South China Sea. Retrieved from Council on
Foreign Relations: http://www.cfr.org/world/armed-clash-South-China-Sea/p27883
This source is mainly about how the risk of conflict in the South China Sea is significant
and must be dealt with carefully. This helps me understand the growing importance of the

N/A. (2016, July 12). Why is the South China Sea So Contentious? Retrieved from BBC:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-Asia-pacific-13748349
This source is mainly about how the South China Sea dispute causes a lot of controversy,
especially where the U.S. Was free to patrol these waters in the past under U.N. maritime
law, but China refuses to adhere to these laws now. This helps, because it explains how
the U.S. Doesn't take sides in these disputes, but is still attempting to patrol the waters. It
also explains how China and the U.S. Have both been accused of militarising the South
China Sea.
Zhao, X. (2015). The Hidden Dragon: Explaining Chinese Aggressive Foreign Policy on the

sovereignty. This helps with my topic, because it provides a students unique view on the
topic and it also will provide me with more sources to be able to go to that are different
from mine, to better understand this topic.
