In the area where pipelines rest on pipe supports it is a high corrosion area.
Difficult and costly to inspect these support areas as the pipeline needs to be lifted.
Difficult to assess the actual extent of corrosion by visual inspection in the contact area.
Until now no alternative methods existed to measure the actual remaining wall thickness at the
pipe support area.
Highly accurate inspection tool that measures actual remaining wall thickness at pipe support
areas without the need to lift off the pipe from the support.
Developed by Dacon research and development team and is unique in its field.
Verified results and now in wide commercial use.
Use UT probes to measure remaining wall Use specially designed system (based on UT) to
Measurement thickness after lifting pipe measure without lifting pipeline
Accuracy Measures defects to within +/- 0.3mm Measures defects to within +/- 0.3mm
Pipeline may need to be shutdown in order to Inspection can be performed online with no need
Shutdown safely lift prior to inspection to shut down the pipeline
Mobilization May need cranes and other lifting equipment No lifting equipment required
More expensive when lifting equipment and Small team with minimal mobilization costs. No
Cost shutdown costs are factored in shutdown costs. Cheaper and easier.
Qualified and experienced UT Level 2 inspector interprets the data and gives final analysis.
Inspecting through paint is fine (depending on paint thickness) but coatings and
insulation need to be removed.
Guided supports cannot be inspected due to tool access. These can be scanned
using location tool to give an indication only.
Does not work where pipeline and support are welded together. Also cannot be used
on saddle supports if welded (non welded is fine).

Inspection Conclusion
Minimum thickness found at test location is 6.70 mm.
Other systems only quantify wall loss and do not give actual remaining wall thickness
