HUMANITARIAN PROJECT

Computer Lab for SJK (Tamil) Ladang Midlands

As an NGO serving the underprivileged and the needy in the Shah Alam community, the Rotary Club
of Shah Alam is helping the newly built Sekolah SJK (Tamil) Ladang Midlands at Jalan Plumbun
7/100, Section 7, Shah Alam to equip their computer classroom with the purchase and installation of
30 units of ACER personal computers, costing over RM60,000.00

The donation of the computers to the schools was in response to a request from the Headmistress of
the school. Puan Varaletchimy Govindaraju for funds to equip their school with computers as the
school is a Government aided school and require additional funds from the public.

Funds for the purchase of the computers were raised from a charity musical performance by the
Dama Orchestra known as The Moon Speaks For My Heart by the Rotary Club of Shah Alam,
through the sale of concert tickets to the public, which raised a total of about RM 100,000, the biggest
fund raising effort by the Rotary Club of Shah Alam, since the club was formed 32 years ago in May
1980.

Rotarian Kong Ling Thoh, the President of the Rotary Club of Shah Alam said the computer project is
a very deserving project as it will definitely bring cheer to the pupils of the school as it gives an
opportunity for the pupils to enter the computer and information technology era to learn how to use
computer.

Mr. S. Kumarel, the Chairman of the Parent-Teachers Association of the school, said the schools PTA,
Board of Governors, teachers and pupils are very thankful to the Rotary Club of Shah Alam for the
timely help of equipping the school with computers. Many pupils have no opportunity to use a
computer before as the majority of the pupils in the school are from poor and lower middle class
homes.

Puan Varaletchimy Govindaraju said with the installation of the computers, the computers will be
used as an education tool for their classes. Puan Varaletetchimy explained that under K.S.S.
(Standard Curriculum for Primary 1 and 2), in this syllabus, there is a new subject known as Teknologi
Maklumat (Information Technology), where the pupils will be exposed to use of the computers in their
class. For the upper Primary classes (Primary 3 6), there are 13 weeks of ICT (Computer Literacy)
classes, which will help these pupils to be more computer literate. As the teaching of some of the
subjects are available in CD room, with the availability of the computers, some of the subjects can be
taught in the computer room. The school will give every class a minimum of 1 hour per week to learn
computers and ICT in the computer room, added Puan Valaratchimy.

Vice-President Rotarian James Wong informed that the Rotary Club of Shah Alam have a long
tradition of helping this Government-aided school. Our Rotary Club had donated a photostat machine
for the school and another project of the Rotary Club of Shah Alam for the school was the provision of
breakfast and lunches for special UPSR revised classes for Primary Six pupils during the school
holidays in 2010.
The new school was officially opened by Yang Amat Berhormat Tan Sri Dato Seri Abdul Kadir bin
Ibrahim. Dato Menteri Besar Selangor on 15 April 2012. The Dato Menteri Besar Selangor also
