energy.Gravitationalpotentialenergyistheenergystoredinan
objectastheresultofitsverticalpositionorheight.Theenergyis
storedastheresultofthegravitationalattractionoftheEarthforthe
object.Thegravitationalpotentialenergyofthemassiveballofa
demolitionmachineisdependentontwovariablesthemassoftheballandtheheighttowhichitis
raised.Thereisadirectrelationbetweengravitationalpotentialenergyandthemassofanobject.More
massiveobjectshavegreatergravitationalpotentialenergy.Thereisalsoadirectrelationbetween
gravitationalpotentialenergyandtheheightofanobject.Thehigherthatanobjectiselevated,the

Todeterminethegravitationalpotentialenergyofanobject,a zeroheightposition
mustfirstbe
arbitrarilyassigned.Typically,thegroundisconsideredtobeapositionofzeroheight.Butthisismerely
anarbitrarilyassignedpositionthatmostpeopleagreeupon.Sincemanyofourlabsaredoneon
tabletops,itisoftencustomarytoassignthetabletoptobethezeroheightposition.Againthisismerely
arbitrary.Ifthetabletopisthezeroposition,thenthepotentialenergyofanobjectisbaseduponits
heightrelativetothetabletop.Forexample,apendulumbobswingingtoandfromabovethetabletop
