LESSON PLAN
Subject : Biology
Topic : Classification of Animals
Class : Year Ten
Level : Senior High School

(Opening)
Good morning, children!
Good morning Maam!
How are you this morning?
Fine, thanks and you?
Im fine too! Thanks! Okay, lets call the roll!
Remember to answer Im here
Anna
Jeha
Jihu
Okay, is anyone away?
No one Maam.
Thats great.
1
(Warming Up)
Okay now, please get your books and pencils out.
Do you ever go to the zoo?
Yes, I do.
What did you see there?
Animals Maam
Great, what animal did you see? Yes, Anna please!
I saw monkeys, birds, snakes and others Maam.
Good, do you know how to classify animal?
No, I dont know
So, today we are going to talk about classification
of animal.
(Lesson)
Okay, now please listen to me. How do we classify
animals?
Classify is to sort things into groups to show how
they are alike.
So, when you classify, you sort things into groups
to show how they are alike.
Because there are many kind of animals, it can
help to classify them in different ways.
All animals are divided into two main groups,
vertebrates and invertebrates.

2
Is anyone know, what is the meaning of vertebrate
and invertebrate?
I know Maam
Yes, Angga, please.
A vertebrate is an animal that has a spine and
invertebrate is an animal that does not have a
spine.
Great Angga, thats true.
Okay, the first, a vertebrate is an animal that has a
spine or backbone. People are vertebrates also!
You can feel your spine going all the way up your
back and through your neck.
Could you give some example of vertebrate?
Yes, lions, birds, snakes, fish.. etc
Good job students. The other example is turtles.
They also have a spine!
The second, invertebrate an animal that does not
have a spine.
The example of it is insects like butterflies and
grasshoppers.
Could you give me another example?
Yes, Maam. It could be spiders, worms, starfish
and squid.

3
Great Jeha! Those are the example of
invertebrates, and most of the worlds animal are
invertebrates.
Now, please take a look on the screen!

Scientist classify vertebrates and invertebrates

into even more groups.
The first is mammals.
Mammals are vertebrate that get milk from their
mother when they are very young.
They breathe air with lungs, and have hair of fur.
Are we mammals Maam?
Right Jihu, people are mammals.
Some mammals also live in water, like whales. But
they still have lungs to breathe oxygen, so they
need to come up for air. They even have hair.
Do you understand?
Yes, Maam

4
The second is birds. Birds are vertebrates and
theyre the only animals that have feathers.
Birds have a beak, two wings, and two legs.
They also lay eggs.
Could all the birds fly Maam?
No, Anni, not all birds fly.
Penguins are flightless birds.
They dive and swim to hunt for fish.
The third is fish. Most fish are vertebrates and live
in water.
They have gills to help them breathe and take in
oxygen out of the water. And many have scales,
which help them move through the water.
Sharks is also fish!
But, they dont have scales Maam.
Thats true, because their body made of cartilage.
Its the same stuff thats in our nose and ears.
The fourth is amphibian. Amphibians are animals
that have adapted to live on water and land.
Could you give an example students?
Frog Maam.
Thats right, frogs are amphibians!
They hatch from tiny, soft eggs in the water.
5
When theyre tadpoles, they breathe through gills
and live underwater. As they get older, most frogs
grow lungs to help them breathe on land.
But many amphibians can breathe underwater
through their skin, which takes oxygen out of the
water.
The other examples are toads, salamanders,
newts, and caecilians.
Amphibians are cold blooded.
What is cold blooded Maam?
Cold blooded animals use the environment to
help control their own body temperatures. They
can use heat from the sun to warm up or they
might use water to cool down.
The example of cold blooded are insects, most
fish, and most reptiles.
The fifth is reptile. Reptiles are vertebrates. They
breathe using lungs, and their bodies are covered
by scales.
Most reptiles lay eggs, like birds.
The example of reptiles are snakes, lizards,
crocodiles, and tortoises.
How about turtles that live in the ocean Maam?

6
Good question, Anna. Sea turtles live in the ocean
are also reptiles. Theyve adapted to live in their
ocean environment.
Do you understand?
Yes, Maam.
(Evaluation)
Okay now open your book page 123. Do the
exercise 2.3 about classification of animals.
(Closing)
Right, thats all for today. See you next week.
