SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES

LESSON PLAN HPE1202

LESSON ORGANISATION (based on Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education)

Intention: By the end of this lesson students should be able to demonstrate and apply the defensive technique in stationary and moving
environments

Pre-lesson organisation:
Ensure all equipment is nearby and there is an adequate amount

Equipment:
16 balls
Cones

Learning Area Outcomes:

Strand: Movement and Physical Activity (MPA)

Sub-Strand: Moving our Body (MB), Understanding Movement (UM), Learning through Movement (LM)
Focus Areas: Active Play and Minor Games (AP), Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), Games and Sport (GS)

Time Task(s) Observations Task Management

(What students do) (What to look for) (Management of Student Group)
Beginning class organisation:
- Bring the class to a stationary point
- Give a brief introduction of what the lesson will be about (defensive work)
- Explain the warm up to students and get them to line up on the baseline

Lesson Plan Template 2016

WARM UP: Dynamic run throughs and Key teaching points: Teacher is positioned in front of the
passing Catch: students walking up and down the
- Eyes on the ball pairs analysing technique and making
- Start with run throughs - Moving towards the ball corrections where necessary.
- Extend hands forward with fingers
- All students line up on the base
spread and thumbs behind the ball
line and do run throughs to half Shoulder pass:
court and back - Opposite foot to the throwing arm
Jog, high knees, butt kicks, forward
side step, grapevine, jog, - Feet shoulder-width apart, with
sprint weight on back foot at start of throw
- Students work on their own - Ball held with two hands initially
then in one hand with arm back
stretches
behind the shoulder
- Arms extended with elbow slightly
Passing- bent, shoulders turned
- In pairs, students practice the - Fingers spread wide behind the ball
different passes stationary - Transfer weight forward as
- Students then move onto throwing arm comes through
practicing passes in a moving - Follow through throwing arm till

forwards and backwards)
- Rotate hips and shoulders towards
Chest pass, shoulder pass, target
bounce pass, lob Chest pass:
- Stand front on with the ball in two
hands at chest height and elbows
down
- Spread fingers around the ball with
thumbs behind
- Step forward with weight
transferred onto front foot as you
push the ball with wrist and fingers
- Ball comes out evenly from both
hands
- Head up- eyes looking forward
Bounce pass:
- Step forwards and bend/lunge on
opposite leg
- Push ball forward and downwards
- Release ball between the hip and
knee
- The path of the ball is lower
under the outstretched hands of the
defender
- The ball should touch the ground
approximately two thirds of the
distance to the receiver and reach
the intended player about knee
height
Everyone in the activity is involved and
participating
Bridging organisation
Call students back into central location, get them to bring in all the equipment as they gather
Number students off 1 7 (ending up with groups of 3) Once you have numbered off the first group make them move out of the
way to avoid students going with their friends
Get 2 students to set up 10 x playing fields (2 cones about 7 metres apart from each other)

Lesson Plan Template 2016

Drill 1 = Shadowing Key Teaching Points: Teacher moves between groups
- Stand in front of opponent with assessing and making adjustments
- In groups of three (1 passer, 1 back to attacker, and body halfway where necessary.
defender, one attacker) across opponents body
- 2 passers stand 7 metres apart - Arms close to sides of body
- The defender stands in front of - Feet shoulder width apart, knees
the attacker about 7 metres away bent, weight slightly forward over
toes and back upright
from the passers
- The defender shadows the - Vision to see attacker and the ball
attacker as they move from left to - Shadow moves using fast small
steps
right
- Aim to move feet, keep head up
- The passer passes to the attacker and maintain vision of the attacker
when they are free and not swing head
- Defender aims to intercepts this
pass
- Swap roles after a few turns

Bridging organisation
Bring students back into central spot, leaving the cones out where they are.
Keep students in the same groups as before
Explain next drill

Time Task(s) Observations Task Management

(What students do) (What to look for) (Management of Student Group)
Drill 2 = Figure 8 Intercepts Key teaching points: Teacher moves between groups
- Reading the pattern of play allows assessing and making adjustments
- In the same groups of three the defender to predict the most where necessary.
likely passing options
- 2 students pass between each - Drive for an intercept at an angle
other while the defender runs in a - Focus on ball
figure 8 around the passers - Emphasis should be on strong first
attempting to intercept the ball 3-4 steps
- Swap roles after about 7/8 figure - Run through to take the ball
8s - Land on the outside foot and
balance

Bridging organisation:
Bring students into central location
Get students to bring in equipment
In same groups of 3, pair 2 groups of 3 together to vs. each other
Playing ground is the court thirds

Game = Defensive set plays Key teaching points: Teacher moves between groups

v 3. - Feet shoulder width apart, knees
- If they drop the ball or step, or if bent, weight slightly forward over
the defenders intercept the ball, toes and back upright
then teams swap over and start - Vision to see attacker and the ball

when 3 v 3. and maintain vision of the attacker
and not swing head

Closing Organisation:

Blow whistle to signal the conclusion of the game

Get students to collect cones and footballs from their playing grid and bring them in and stack neatly.
Students to sit down in-front of teacher

Lesson Plan Template 2016

Closure:

Students are sitting in-front of the teacher

Ask students what they have learnt today
Ask students the key teaching points of AFL mark and kicking for goals (call on individual students if necessary)
Conclude the lesson
