Lesson Plan: What holds more: Volume Investigation

Goals/Objectives:
Students will be able to make a prediction and evaluate its accuracy
Students will be able to compare capacity of three containers
Students will be able to record data

Standards :

KEY LEARNING AREA: Scientific Thinking and Technology Exploring, Scientific Inquiry,
and Discovery

2.4 K.A.1 Describe and compare attributes of length area, weight and capacity of everyday
objects

Compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common .

Materials and Preparation:

Three plastic cups in different colors heights and widths

little dixie cups
water bottle
Baking trays
Poster
plastic containers of water
post its
smocks if possible
towels

will provide two trays with three cups of various sizes for each table
I will set up a chart with a picture of the three colors of cups with space for students to put their
posters

Classroom arrangement and management

Students will be at their tables with materials pre laid out

The Hook (3-5 minutes) : Investigative Question

I will show students 3 different cups and ask them which one they think will hold more water

they will then turn and talk with their partners

after the turn and talk students will each get a post-it they will put their name the color of the cup
they choose and stick it two a poster that has the three cups depicted on it

I will ask students why they made their prediction

The Body (10-20 minutes)

I will give each pair the go ahead to try to fill their cups
I will provide support but I want them to come up with their own strategies to fill the cups and
compare their results.

Before they are given the go head I will ask them to tell me how we should pour water (gently )
and model for them the expectations I have for the activity

Closure: (5-7 minutes)

Each pair will record what result they got red cup, blue cup, green by coloring on a picture of a
cup I give each table to record their data

we will come together on the rug and talk about our results

was your prediction right ?

Which cup held the most? Which cup held the least?

Were you surprised by which cup held the most?

We will record how many of each result we got on a chart

Anticipating Students Responses :

I anticipate water will spill I am modeling exceptions for handling materials but I am prepared
for this investigation to get messy

i anticipate some students may find it difficult to work together I will select partners I feel work
best together and monitor students i sense may have difficulties more closely

Assessment of Goals:

Are students able to make and support a prediction about what they think will happen

Are students able to use capacity to compare the containers

Are students able to investigate and see if their prediction was right

Accommodations:

I do not think I will need special accommodations for my students during this activity
