Ans. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth . The Moon casts its
shadow on a part of the Earth by blocking the Sun, so the Sun gets hidden from our view.
Q11. How does a lunar eclipse take place?
Ans. Lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon .The Moon passes
behind the Earth such that the Earth blocks the Suns rays. Thus the shadow of the Earth fall on the Moon

Q7. Answer in detail:

Q-1. What is frictional force? How is it important for motion?
Ans. Frictionl force is produced when two substance rub each other. Friction is important for motion. If we
walk on a very smooth surface like ice, we may slip or fall because there is very little friction between ice
and our feet. While some friction require a greater effort to make smooth.
Q-2 What is an inclined plane? Give two uses of it?
Ans. An inclined plane is a slope between higher level and lower level. It makes work easier. It reduces the
effort needed to lift the object.
Q-3. What is nuclear energy?
Ans. Matter is made of even tiny particles called atoms. The central part of an atom is nucleus. The
breaking of this nucleus or joining of two nuclei which produce lot of energy is called nuclear energy. The
energy is produced in the form of rays.
Q-4. How do earthquakes take place?
Ans. 1) The tectonic plates on the Earths crust float on mantle.
2) As these plates move slowly, they bump into each other or move away from each other.
3) The edges of these plates are stuck while rest of the plates keep moving.
4) Finally, when the plate moves far enough, the edges get released and form seismic waves.
5) It sends shivers through the ground making it quiver. Then there is an earthquake.
Q-5. What is Tsunami?
Ans. When an earthquake takes place under an ocean, it causes giant waves. These waves can travel
hundreds of kilometres through water before they hit the coast. Such waves are called Tsunami.
Q-6. What tupe of material is ejected by the volcano? How does it affect normal life?
Ans. The volcanos eject lava along with rocks in form of ash, cinders, pumica and gases. Lava flows very
rapidly burning forest, cities and everything that comes across it. Some volcanoes release clouds of
poisonous gas that cause ill health if inhaled.
Q-7. What are the causes and effects of a drought?
Ans. A period of very hot and dry weather due to lack of rainfall for a long time causes a drought. 1) Due
to drought, lake, wells and stream dry up. 2) There is shortage of drinking water. 3) Plants and crops wither
away and dry. 4) Animals suffer. 5) Forest fire occurs and spread rapidly.
Q8. Write in brief about the second layer of the Earths atmosphere.
Ans Stratophere is the second layer of atmosphere . Many jet aircrafts fly in this layer because there is no
distuerbance due to weather here.It contains ozone gas which help to absorb the harmful rays of the sun.
Q9. What are the properties of air ?
Ans. The properties of air are :

1. Air is colourless , tasteless and odourless.

2. Air occupies pspace .
3. Air has weight and exerts pressure.
4. Hot air expands and rises up.

Q10.. How does the atmosphere protect the Earth?

Ans. 1. The atmosphere is of great importance for the existence and continuation of life on Earth.
2. The presence of oxygen in the atmosphere makes respiration possible for living things and supports life .
3. Atmosphere absorb harmful ullraviolet radiation of the sun and protects life on Earth.
4. It absorbs energy from the Sun and recycle water.
5. It reduces temperature extremes between day and night.
Q11. What is water table?
Ans. Rain water falls down to the Earth. Some of it seeps though the layers of soil till reaches the layer of
non-porous rocks . It collects on top . The top of this underground water is called the water table.
Q12. What is chlorination?
Ans. Water may contain germs even after removing insoluble particles from it ,So chlorine gas is passed
through it to kill germs .This method is called chlorination.
Q13. What is the importance of the topsoil?
Ans. 1.The topsoil which is the upper of the soil is dark in colour and rich in humus .
2. Seeds germinate and roots of small plants grow in this layer .
Q14. What are the causes of soil erosion?
Ans. The causes of soil erosion are :

1.) Deforestation : The main cause of soil erosion is the removal of vegetation or plants from the
surface of the soil which is called deforestation .
2.) Soil erosion by water : Heavy rains and running water remove the top soil.
3.) Soil erosion by wind : Strong winds blows aways particles of soil with it.

into the Moon and dig craters in the Moons surface.
Q18. What are the effects of absence of atmosphere on the Moon?
Ans.1. There is almost no atmosphere on the Moon.Thats why there are no plants and animals.
2. Sunlight does not get scattered on the Moon because of the absence of air .so the sky looks dark and the
stars are visible even during day time and absence of air sound waves are not able to travel thats why no
sound on the Moon.
3. There is on wind to move the dust on the surface of the Moon. Sso the footprints of the astronauts will
be preserved for many years.
Q19. Why is the Moon not visible to us on the new moon night?
Ans. The Moon does not have its own light and it reflects the light of the Sun . On a new Moon night ,
when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, the sunlight falls on the part of the Moon which is
turned away from us and so the Moon is not visible to us.
Q20. How are tides caused?
Ans. 1. Tides are periodic rise and fall of water caused by the gravity of the Moon and the Sun.
2. There is high tide when thye water lavel rises and low tide when the water level falls.
Q21. What do astronauts have to learn before going into space?
Ans. 1. Astronauts have to undergo intensive training to acquire all the skills and knowledge required on a
space mission.
2. They learn how to deal with emergencies , and learn about rocks and soil. They used latest computer
technology , thats why they have to be well educated and have strong technical skills.
Q22. How does the blood keep on circulating in our body?
Ans. The heart keeps on beating constantly and pumps blood constantly to different organs of the body.
After moving through the whole body the impuuuure blood comes back to the heart From here the heart
pumps pure blood towards the organs. This way blood keeps on moving in our body.
Q8. Short notes:

1. Filtration
Filtration is a method of purifying water by passing it through a thin cloth or filter paper. A
filter paper acts like a strainer. It allows the water to pass through it but holds back the solid
particles. A circular piece of filter paper is folded in to a cone and placed in a funnel. The water
along with its impurities is gently poured into the funnel with the help of a glass rod. The
insoluble particles settle on top of the filter paper and the clear water is collected in a container
kept below the funnel.
2. Distillation
The process of purifying water which involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam
is called distillation. It involves two processes evaporation and condensation of water. This
method is used to separate soluble impurities from water. Impure water is heated till it boils. On
boiling, water evaporates leaving impurities behind in the flask. The steam is passed through a
condenser which is kept cool by circulating cold water around it. The steam cools down in the
cool condenser and changes into water which is collected in another flask. This water is
absolutely pure.

Q9. Draw the diagrams:

1 Filtration
2 Structure of heart
3 Layers of soil.
