Compatibility Release 9.0 is compatible with previous software releases 7.1 and 8.0 only for
for upgrade the purpose of upgrading existing AccessMAX equipment to Release 9.0
during a maintenance window.

The upgrade from 7.1 to 9.0 takes place in two parts. First, upgrade CPUs to
8.0 using release software included in the AUP Release 9.0 CD. Then complete
the procedure by upgrading all AccessMAX equipment to 9.0.

Upgrade to Release 9.0 enables high-density Native ATM broadband services and
Release 9.0 transport in an AccessMAX system.

To upgrade an AccessMAX system to Release 9.0, use the GUI-based

AUP to perform a live software upgrade with minimal service impact.
To provide Native ATM in an AccessMAX system for the first time, do
the following procedures in addition to the software upgrade:
Hardware upgrade - Change out control, transport, and uplink
plug-in cards in terminals where broadband services will be deployed.
ATM migration - Use the Craft Interface or Panorama to convert
existing AoT ADSL services to Native ATM ADSL.
This document contains steps and references for each of these procedures.

AUP Upgrade Process

How the AUP performs a system software upgrade with the following steps:
upgrade works
1. Backup existing AUP backs up the current database before starting
database the upgrade.
2. Discover system AUP surveys the AccessMAX system, all
terminals, transport spans, and plug-in cards.
AUP then populates the card list.
3. Group cards AUP groups plug-in cards by type. This ensures a
fast and efficient upgrade with minimal effect on
AccessMAX system services. AUP displays these
groups to the user.
4. Upgrade standby AUP upgrades all standby redundant cards and
cards and memory the standby memory of all dual-memory cards.
5. Switchover to AUP switches all active redundant cards to
upgraded cards and standby and all dual-memory cards to the
memory upgraded memory.
6. Upgrade remaining AUP upgrades all remaining cards.
cards and memory
7. Backup post-upgrade AUP backs up the database after a successful
database upgrade.

Three types of AUP provides three types of upgrade for the AccessMAX system:
upgrade
Full upgrade: performs upgrade operations on every upgradeable plug-in
card in your system.
Half upgrade: only upgrades one card in a redundant card pair and one
memory bank in dual memory cards. In a half upgrade, AUP allow you to
evaluate the new software before committing the rest of the system.
Slot-specific upgrade: performs upgrade operations on a single plug-in
slot that you define.

Note: If AUP cannot complete the upgrade, it will stop and display an error
message. View the log file to get more information about the upgrade
attempt. You can also contact AFCs Technical Assistance Center for
help with the upgrade.

Upgrading Your AccessMAX System

Special case: DLP plug-in cards must be assigned to a GR-303 group to be upgraded. If a
DLP plug-in DLP card in your system is not provisioned as part of a GR-303 group, AUP
cards
will display a message with this information. To upgrade a DLP plug-in card,
assign it to a GR-303 group first.

Special case: If you deploy ISDN plug-in cards, update your ISDN cross-connects to avoid
ISDN plug-in consuming unallocated bandwidth. Change any plug-in-to-plug-in
cards
cross-connects to groomed (circuit-to-circuit) cross-connects.

Special case: If you are upgrading an AccessMAX locally and the system contains an IPMI
IPMI plug-in network connection, disconnect the IPMI network connection before you
card
upgrade. This will prevent flow-through provisioning during a system upgrade.

Notify the network center before disconnecting the IPMI. You will re-connect
the IPMI after completion of the upgrade.

ALERT: This procedure affects network communications.

Note: Once the IPMI plug-in card has been upgraded to Release 9.0, it will
not accept a reversion to an earlier software load. If there is a possibility
that you may revert the AccessMAX system back to an earlier software
load, have a spare IPMI plug-in card available.

Special case: In a Survivable Transport ring, the AUP sees non-redundant FO-XCVR spans

Introduction To provide Native ATM ADSL, upgrade to AccessMAX Release 9.0 and
replace specific narrowband control and transport plug-in cards with
broadband cards. This section contains procedures for common control and
uplink plug-in card changeouts.

Note: To change out transport plug-in cards, see the AccessMAX Transport
Facilities Upgrade Guide for change out procedures.

To provide Native ATM, a broadband terminal requires:

OC3c-XCVR, OC12c-XCVR, DC3c-XCVR, or IMA as an uplink at the

LET. The OC3c supports mixed mode ATM. T1-XCVR and T1X-XCVR
provisioned as uplinks do not support Native ATM.
CPU-3 in the primary shelf and ELU-3/EBC-3 pairs for any expansion
shelves as common control plug-in cards.
OC3c-XCVR, OC12c-XCVR, or IMA links for inter-terminal transport.
You can run Release 9.0 on your AccessMAX system without broadband
control, transport, and service plug-in cards. In this case, the broadband
functions of the release will not be available.

To provide broadband service within the network, you need CPU-3 and an
OC3c-XCVR, OC12c-XCVR, DC3c-XCVR, or IMA uplink at the LET.
To provide broadband service from RST1 and RST3, you need:
CPU-3 in RST1, RST2, and RST3,
OC3c-XCVR, OC12c-XCVR, or IMA link transport from the LET to
RST1, LET to RST2, RST2 to RST3,
ELU-3 and EBC-3 to connect expansion shelves to the primary
shelves in each terminal.
To provide broadband service for mixed mode (systems deploying both
Native ATM and AoT) topology, or for a system with more than
512 VCCs, use an OC3c-XCVR uplink.

Note: OC3c-XCVR supports mixed mode operation (both AoT and Native
ATM). OC12c-XCVR supports only Native ATM.

ATM Migration

Enable To utilize the full broadband capabilities of Release 9.0, migrate existing AoT
broadband ADSL connections to Native ATM ADSL connections. For an explanation
capabilities
about the two different types of ADSL service, see the AccessMAX xDSL
Application Guide.

This section describes the steps to convert ADSL connections from AoT (ATM
over TDM) ATM to Native ATM (ATM end-to-end or broadband ATM).

Considerations Before migrating any VCCs from AoT to Native ATM in an AccessMAX
terminal, confirm completion of the following:

An upgrade of the AccessMAX system to Release 9.0 with AUP and,

Installation of broadband control, broadband uplink, and broadband
transport plug-in cards where necessary.

Note: T1-XCVR or T1X-XCVR uplinks do not support Native ATM. Do not

attempt to migrate VCCs to Native ATM if the system uplink is T1 or
T1X.

It is possible that bit errors as high as 1 X 10-6 may occur on the uplink for the
duration of the migration to Native ATM. Once the migration is complete,
these bit errors will cease.

Note: Do not remove the concentrator plug-in card until after you have
completed the migration steps on the next page or until after you have
used Panorama to migrate narrowband VCCs to broadband VCCs.

! ALERT

! ALERT: Follow ATM migration steps before removing

the ATM concentrator card. Otherwise, you will lose
data service.

IMA

introduction IMA (inverse multiplexing for ATM) provides Native ATM over existing
copper plant. With AccessMAX IMA, you can convert existing AoT data
traffic to Native ATM without deploying fiber transport.

What IMA does IMA provides Native ATM capability using existing copper lines via a T1-IMA
link.

AccessMAX IMA groups two or more (up to eight) T1 lines into a logical
ATM circuit, known as an IMA group. IMA detects an ATM cell stream and
distributes the cells in round-robin order over T1s linked in an IMA group.
This figure shows an ATM cell stream transmitted across a network using IMA
technology.

IMA migration Before you deploy IMA to convert AoT traffic to Native ATM, consider the
considerations following:

Which terminals will deploy IMA.

The bandwidth of the IMA groups, and the number of T1s required at
each terminal to support that bandwidth.
Whether there is an existing OC3c or IMA compatible router-side uplink.
Verify that you have a sufficient number of IMA plug-in cards and T1 cards,
and that your uplink to the ATM router is compatible before you begin the
migration process.

IMA Group

Each IMA plug-in card supports four IMA groups.

Each terminal can support a maximum of 16 IMA groups.
Each IMA group contains one active and one standby IMA plug-in card.
Adding or deleting IMA links to an IMA group is non-service affecting,
unless you remove more than the minimum number of links.
Active and standby IMA plug-in cards must be located in the same shelf.
Configure an IMA group as ATM Uplink (default) or ATM Service.

Modify ATM Traffic Profiles

Purpose Use the Modify ATM Traffic Profiles command to provision ATM traffic
profiles. A VCC uses an ATM traffic profile to set QoS and data rates. The
system provides 4,096 traffic profiles.

A traffic profile with a value of 0 indicates an AoT profile. Traffic profile 1

contains system defaults that are not editable, but can be used.

Create non-zero traffic profiles to assign to Native ATM virtual connections

that you plan to migrate to Native ATM. Use the conversion formula on
page 88 to verify that the downstream/upstream cell rates you choose are
compatible with the downstream/upstream kbps rates on the corresponding
port profiles of the ADSL card.

If you create a traffic profile with a QoS class of CBR or rt-VBR, you may see
a warning, Warning - terminal mode does not support this class. This occurs
because the ATM terminal mode has not yet been set to Broadband Enabled.
You will set the terminal to enable broadband in a later step.

Transceiver Settings Definitions

Introduction to The following are definitions for each transceiver setting that may display
definitions using the List Transceiver Settings or Modify Transceiver Settings commands.
For the options available for each setting, see Transceiver Settings Tables
beginning on Transceiver Settings Tables on page 103.

A-E Asynchronous Service

Designates whether a T1HD-XCVR or T1HD2-XCVR plug-in card provides
asynchronous service.

Disabled provides synchronous service.

Enabled provides asynchronous service and functions like a T1A card while
using HDSL line coding.

ATM Concentration
OC3c-XCVR or OC3cu-XCVR plug-in card service type when provisioned to
concentrate ATM traffic. Concentration efficiently manages bandwidth in the
AccessMAX network. One OC3c-XCVR or OC3cu-XCVR can concentrate
32 ATM pipes.

As a concentrator, the OC3c-XCVR plug-in card allows up to 31 incoming

ATM pipes. The concentrator aggregates these incoming pipes into a single
ATM pipe through the AccessMAX system. When provisioned as a
concentrator, use one OC3c-XCVR card per AccessMAX CBA.

ATM Payload Scrambling

Scrambles ATM payload cell patterns.

ATM Service
Designates an OC3c-XCVR as a service drop to a providers ATM network. As
an ATM service card, the OC3c-XCVR plug-in card provides User-to-Network
Interface (UNI) service drops. Use the OC3c-XCVR provisioned as an ATM
service card for applications requiring interface to co-located equipment with
drops of no less than 3 feet.

Designates the T1-XCVR, T1X-XCVR, OC3c-XCVR, OC3cu-XCVR, or
OC12c-XCVR as the interface to a providers ATM network.

Attenuation
Specifies line build-out values applied to the transmit end to maintain a desired
signal level at the receive end.

Channel Format
Specifies the timeslot-to-channel assignment protocol to use when interfacing
the AccessMAX system to external (not AccessMAX) equipment.

Current
Designates power for the plug-in card.
Source the plug-in card is powered and can provide power for repeaters.
Sink the plug-in card is not powered, and power is looped through the plug-in
card from an external loop power source.

Doubler Power
Specifies whether the doubler power on the T1HD span is enabled or disabled.
Enabled the T1HD-XCVR span is powered and can power system doublers.
Sealing current is not available.
Disabled the plug-in card is not powered, and the Sealing Current option is
available to provide sealing current over the span.

Enable Timing Source

Specifies whether a groomed T1 span can be a timing source if the BITS clock
and TR-8 spans are unavailable. This option is available only for groomed T1
spans. The transceiver plug-in card must be in a primary shelf.

Equalization
Specifies equalization to compensate for the frequency response characteristics
of the cable and their effect on transmission bandwidth. The equalization
required is determined by the length and type of cable. The equalization
settings apply to standard ABAM cable.

F-M Fractional Channel

Designates if a transceiver is provisioned for Nx64 subgroups. If the
transceiver is enabled for Nx64 it becomes unavailable for transport or for
ATM uplink service.

Frame Format
Specifies the type of framing to use in AccessMAX.
SF Super Frame
ESF Extended Super Frame

Groomed Service
Designates the communication protocol between this transceiver plug-in card
and the other end of the transmission span.
Yes groomed service, when the other end of the span is not an AccessMAX
transceiver plug-in card. A channel format protocol is required.
No AccessMAX internal transmission protocol, when the other end of the span
is a AccessMAX transceiver plug-in card.

HDSL Mode
Designates the HDSL mode for the T1HD-XCVR or T1HD2-XCVR plug-in
card.
Master the HDSL transceiver is equipped as an HTU-C or HLU, typically
installed in an LET.
Slave the HDSL transceiver is equipped as an HTU-R or HRU, typically
installed in an RST.

Line Build Out

For the DS3I-XCVR, specifies the values applied to the transmit end to
maintain a desired signal level at the receive end.

Line Coding
Defines how data is formatted for transmission on a T1-XCVR, T1X-XCVR,
T1HD-XCVR, or T1HD2-XCVR plug-in card, or on a T1 interface on a
PairGain HTU or ADTRAN HRU. Line coding types supported are B8ZS and
AMI/ZCS. These settings must match on both ends of the circuit.

Mode Configuration
Specifies whether the RT/T1-XCVR acts as an Integrated Access Device (IAD)
interface or a line-powering T1-XCVR.

S-Z, continued Sealing Current

Designates that the T1HD-XCVR or T1HD2-XCVR plug-in card is powered
when the Doubler Power option is set to Disabled. Typically, the Master HDSL
is set to Source, and the Slave HDSL is set to Sink.
Disabled disables sealing current across the T1HD span.
Source (T1HD only) generates current.
Sink (T1HD only) receives and grounds or terminates current.

Service
Designates the function of the transceiver: ATM Uplink, ATM Concentrator,
Transport, or ATM service.

Timing Source Enable

Controls whether or not the CPU may use a particular OC3c, T1, or T1X card
as a timing reference when that card is in uplink mode. This provisioning
applies to OC3c-XCVR cards provisioned as uplinks.

Timing Source Enabled

Specifies whether a groomed T1, T1HD, or T1HD2 span can function as a
timing source if the BITS clock and TR-8 spans are unavailable. This option is
available only for groomed T1, T1HD, or T1HD2 spans. The transceiver
plug-in card must be in a primary shelf.

Transceiver
Specifies whether a T1, fiber, or SSR transceiver span can carry traffic in a
network.

Enabled enables the transceiver plug-in card for use.

Disabled disables the transceiver plug-in card from use. Power is still applied
to line powering transceiver plug-in cards and any doublers or repeaters in the
span. You can disable a transceiver plug-in card to take it out of service for
maintenance, to suppress alarms, or to prevent use of a span with intermittent
faults. Alarm reporting is suppressed, but status is reported in the List
Performance Data command in the Maintenance Menu.

Refers to the OC3c-XCVR plug-in card provisioned as a high-rate,
point-to-point ATM transport between AccessMAX terminals, supporting both
ATM over TDM (AoT) and Native ATM connections. The card carries TDM
and ATM traffic; TDM traffic is converted to ATM cells. 50 Mbps are reserved
for the TDM backplane, 5 Mbps are reserved for SONET overhead, and the
remaining 100 Mbps are reserved for Native ATM traffic.

As an interterminal transceiver, the OC12c-XCVR plug-in card supports both

AoT and Native ATM connections. The card carries TDM and ATM traffic;
TDM traffic is converted to ATM cells. 50 Mbps are reserved for the TDM
backplane, 20 Mbps are reserved for SONET overhead, and up to 500 Mbps
are available for Native ATM traffic.

Yellow Alarm Indication

Specifies how the yellow remote (REM) alarm is transported on a groomed T1
span. Only available for groomed T1 spans.

FS: With SF frame format, the Yellow Alarm Indication is indicated by Bit 12
of the frame synchronization pattern being set to 1. With ESF frame format, the
yellow alarm is indicated by a repeated Bit Oriented Message (BOM) of
1111111100000000 in the FS data link.
Bit 2: The yellow alarm is transported via Bit 2.
