BIO GAS
(1) Bio Gas the metabolic product of anaerobic digestion is a mixture of methane and carbon
dioxide with small quantities of H2S. Methane is the desired component of biogas is a
colourless blue burning gas used for cooking heating and lighting Bio gas is a clean
efficient and renewable source of energy which can be used as a substitute for other fuels
in order to save energy in rural areas. In anaerobic digestion organic materials are
degraded by bacteria in the absence of Oxygen converting it into a methane and carbon
dioxide mixture.
The digestate or slurry from the
digester is rich in ammonium and other
nutnients used as an organic furtilizer
methane formation in an acrobic
digestion in volves four different
steps including hydrolysis,
acidogenesis, acetogenesis and
methanogenesis. Different bacteria /
archacea communities work in a syntrophic relationship with each other to form methane.

(2) Composition of Bio Gas

Component Concentnation
(by volume)
Methane (CH4) 55 60%
CO2 35 40%
H2S 20 20000PPm
NH3 0 0.05%
O2 2%
H2 1%

(3) Principles for production of Bio gas :-

Anerobic digestion
Aerobic digestion
The digestion process occurring in
presence of Oxygen is called Aerobic
digestion and produces mixture of gases
having CO2. The chief GHG responsible for
global warming.
The digestion process occurring without
Oxygen is called anaerobic digestion
which generates mixture of gases. The gas
produced which is mainly methane
produces 5200 5800 KJ/m3 which when
burned at normal room temp and presents a
viable environmentally friendly energy source
to replace fossil fucues.

(4) Benefits of Bio gas technology :-

Production of energy
Transformation of organic waste to very high quality fertilizer.
Improvement of hygenic condition through reduction of pathogen.
Micro economical benefits by energy and fertilizer substitutes.

(5) Application of Bio gas in Household Digester

Cooking & heating
Bio gas stoves
Fertilizer
Lighting and power generation,
Besides common applications domestic
biogas is also utilized for other purposes.
Gas powered refrigerators can run on
household biogas which is a well known
application in Kenya. In India around
4600 public toilets are connected to
biogas digesters by a local NGO to improve social living conditions of the people
similarly in Nepal, Public toilets are connected to biogas digestion to light these
toilets.
