Approaches to revision in IGCSE Chemistry

1 Get organised:
Collect together all the resources that are going to help you revise effectively these
include, but are not limited to:

Class notes
Textbook which includes a really comprehensive key word list at the back
Revision guide
Criteria checklist booklet which also includes help & tips on effective revision
Any revision aids you have bought or made for yourself flash cards, spider
diagrams, reactions summary sheets etc

2 Allocate time effectively see the 1 Hour Plan guide to revision on page 2

3 Use of the textbooks

It is imperative that the work is thoroughly learned. Your main task over Easter is to do
the learning. Past paper practice is nothing without knowledge. The textbook is
excellent. Begin by using your criteria checklist booklet to identify chapters in the
textbook that are relevant to your exam. In this way you can cover the course by working
through the book. Do some of the check questions at the end of each double page
spread to check your progress & understanding. Use your class notes too alongside,
where your teachers will have given you different angles on a difficult idea or a variety of
examples.

4 Past papers:
Do the past paper issued to you at College before departing for Easter holiday.
Then, use given mark scheme to check your answers.

Look at Edexcel International website for some more practice material but
remember that amount of IGCSE old material that Edexcel make publicly available
is limited.

5 When you return to College:

Be prepared to come to lessons and clinics having clearly identified the ideas you
still find hard to understand or with those practice questions you just dont get.

There will be a class mock exam for every Fifth Form pupil in the first double lesson
back after Easter. This is how we will assess the effectiveness of your revision.

Guide to revision The 1 Hour plan

It is important to break revision down into manageable amounts of time when you are most
alert and active. It is equally important to give topics enough time so that useful learning
can be done.

A 1 hour segment of revision may look like this

5 minutes
Short break
give brain a rest 10 minutes
Check the specifications
requirements & topic criteria
5 minutes sheet.
Check answers &
spec again

Topic:
Rates of reaction

15 minutes
Attempt question -

use textbook quick 25 minutes

check questions or Conscientious, pro-

past paper question active learning, noting

etc

After two successive hours you will have done a lot of good revision have a 20 minute
break

Now do a third hour before a long break or alternative activity.
