knowledgeofelectronicsbutlearningthejargontakestime.Inthistutorial,Iwilllayout

thevariousterminologyyoushouldknowwhentryingtomakeaPCB.Achievingan

understandingofsuchacronymsandterminologywilleasecommunicationwithother

peopleexcitedabouttakingtheirconceptualelectroniccircuittoafinalboardwithCAD

GeneralCircuitAcronyms

IntegratedCircuit(IC)

savespace.

TherearevarioussizesoftypicalSMDtechnology.Theyrangefrom0402,0603,0805,

1210,andmore.The0402SMDpartsaresmallerthanthe1210.Thelargecomponents

(1210)takemorespaceonyourPCB.Therefore,dependingonthesizeofthePCBand

yourdesign,youcanusesmallerorbiggersize.However,donotethatthesmallersizes

aremoredifficulttosolder.

GND

Thisreferstoground.AGNDisnecessaryincircuit.Itisthereferenceat0volts.

Therefore,allothervoltagesinthecircuitarerelativetoGND.

VCC/Vin

Thisreferstotheinputvoltagefromanexternalsource.Theinputvoltagecanbeobtained

fromACpoweroutlets,batteries,orevensolarpanels.Ingeneral,anythingthatcan

supplypowertothecircuit.VCCisrelativetoGND.YoucanseeanexampleofVCCin

thebelowimage.

Aftercreatingaschematic,youwillruntheERCcheck.Thiswillmakesureyoufollow

thebasicrulesofelectronics.Itwillgenerateerrors,ifforexample,youconnectVCCand

GNDtogether.Itwillalsogivewarnings(noterrors)ifsomeofthepinsonICsdonot

haveconnections.

benoorafewSMDs,e.g.resistors.Thistechniquegivesyoumoreroomtoworkwith.

Layers

Inthesetutorials,Iwilldealwith2layersforsimplicity.Notethatinmostdesigns,2

layersareenough.Inthiscase,thetwolayersarereferredtoasthetopandbottom,and

correspondtothetwosidesofthePCB.Copperroutescanbecreatedonbothlayers.

DesignRulesCheck(DRC)

SimilartotheERCinSchematics,theDRCisthefinalcheckbeforebeingsenttobe

fabricated.TheDRCensuresyourdesignmeetsthestandardssetforthbythefabricator.

Thischeckincludesverifyingthephysicalsizeoftheboard,widthofroutes,diameterof

vias,numberoflayers,distancefromtheedgeoftheboardstothenearestSMDs,and

muchmore.TheDRCcheckcanbealife-savesincewithoutit,youwouldhavenowayof

knowingifthePCBwillturnoutasplanned.Mostofthetimethefabricatorswillprovide

aDRCfileforyoutouse.YouwillthenrunyourdesignthroughtheDRCfiletoseeifit

everythingworksasplanned.

CreatingaNewProjectinEaglePCB

IamusingaMacbookProlaptop,however,thesamemenusexistforWindows7/8

operatingsystems.Tocreateaproject,followthesesteps:

1. ClickonFile->New->Project

APCBrequirestheuseofcomponents.Componentsareresistors,capacitors,integrated

circuits(ICs),andmuchmore.Ingeneral,componentsarethecoreelementstocreating

aPCB.IwillusetheSparkfunEagleLibrary,whichIhighlyrecommend.Theyhavean

Thelaststepinthissetuptutorialiscreatinganewschematic.Theschematicisthemost importantaspectofthePCB,whichallowsyoutomakealayoutofyourcircuit.Itdictates whichcomponentswillbeinyourcircuitandhowtheyareconnected.Eachproject,in

thiscase,12CAD.comTutorialmusthaveaschematicattachedtoit.Todoso,follow

thesesteps:

CreatingaSchematic

InordertosendaPCBforfabrication,thefirststepistocreateaschematic.Aschematic

isvisualrepresentationoftheelectricalconnections.Intheprevioustutorial,Iexplained

howtocreateanewprojectandschematicfilesocheckthatoutbeforecontinuinghere.

Sparkfunlibraries,however,youmayhavemorelibraries.Ifyouexpandalibrary,you

HowtoaddaNetJunction

IfyourefertoFigure1ofthevoltagedivider,youwillseethatVoutisbranchingout

betweenthetworesistors.Thepointinbetweenthetworesistorswillmostlikelyconnect tootherpartsofyourcircuit.Therefore,weneedtoaddajunctionwhichanetcan connectto.ThejunctionoptionislocatedinthelefttoolbarandalsointheDrawmenu.
