5. The mean and the standard deviation for the quality point averages of a
random sample of 36 college seniors are calculated to be 2.6 and 0.3
respectively, assumed the point is normally distributed.
(i) Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean quality point of the
entire senior class. Ans: (2.502, 2.698)
(ii) What is the smallest sample size required if we want to be 95%
confident that the estimate of mean is off by less than 0.01. Ans: 3458
6. In a study on 123 patients living in Saudi Arabia of age 15 or more who were
admitted for diabetic ketoacidosis, the mean blood glucose level was 26.2
mmol/l. Suppose that the blood glucose levels for such patients have a normal
distribution with a standard deviation of 3.3 mmol/l. Find a 90% confidence
interval for the mean blood glucose level of such diabetic ketoacidosis
patients. Ans: 25.7105, 26.6895
7. (i) The number of accidents per week at an intersection varies with mean
2.2 and standard deviation 1.4. Find the probability of sample mean
over the course of 52 weeks is greater than 2? How many weeks
needs to be taken to provide a 0.05 probability that the sample mean
will be less than 2? Ans: 0.1515; 133
8. The population standard deviation for the age of APU students is 15 years.
(a) A random sample of 100 is taken. What is the standard error of mean if the
population size is 5000? Ans: 1.4851
(b) If we want to be 95% confident that the sample mean age is within 2 years
of the true population mean age, how many randomly selected students
must be surveyed? Ans: 217
10. Construct null and alternative hypothesis for the following situation, then state
whether the test is left, right or two-tailed test.
(a) a random sample of 100 recorded deaths in Malaysia during the past
year showed an average of 71.8 years. Assuming a population standard
deviation of 8.9 years, does this seem to indicate that the mean life
span today is greater than 70 years? H0: 70; H1: >70
(b) A manufacturer of sports equipment has developed a new synthetic
fishing line. From the previous record, the mean breaking strength was
8 kg. The manufacturer claims that with this new fishing line, the
breaking strength of the fishing line can be reduced. To test the
hypothesis, a random sample of 50 lines is tested and found to have a
mean breaking strength of 7.8kg and standard deviation of 0.5kg.
H0: 8; H1: <8
