One hot sunny day in Nevada, a Jackrabbit was resting under a Joshua tree. The
Jackrabbit was tired from searching for water all day. He was beginning to feel hopeless
until he saw a Desert Tortoise walking by. The Jackrabbit jumps up thinking to himself
that Desert Tortoises always know where some water is, as he hops over to the tortoise.
The Jackrabbit quickly and excitedly introduces himself as Jack and asks if the tortoise
knows where some water is because he has been thirsty all day looking for some. The
tortoise slowly replies that her name is Shelly and that she wont tell him where water is.
Jack jumps back in shock, asking her many questions wanting to know why she wont
tell him. Shelly replies,If I tell you where water is, you will just leave and forget about
me. Thats what everyone does. No one wants to be a friend until they need something.
For once Jack stays quiet while he thinks about what Shelly said. Jack comes up with
an idea. Shelly!, he yells, Come with me to the water. We can talk and hang out on
the way there and while we drink. Come on! Just give it a try old gal. Shelly pauses for
a long time before she agrees to show him the way. It felt like a long journey for Jack. In
the beginning Jack talked nonstop about himself while Shelly listened but after a while
his thirst forced to keep his mouth closed. He was upset he couldn't talk anymore but
then Shelly started talking. She talked about the many things she has seen in her life,
the good and the bad. The pain she went through when her parents left but how happy
she was when she had a baby. Jack realized it was a good thing he couldn't talk for a
while, he had learned so much. They reached the water together. Shelly said,Thank
you Jack for listening to me and being good company. Jack replied,I had a great time!
