English Fun Centre

II)Project Background

A. Project Overview
English Fun Centre or EFC is an aspiration of three young and dedicated
fellows of SMK Kota Masai 2. SMK Kota Masai 2 is a band 5 rural school in Pasir
Gudang and is located at Taman Kota Masai, near to an industrial park of Johor
Port. Majority of the family of SMK Kota Masai 2 comes from middle to low
income family with most of them are working at the Singapore or nearby
industrial park. SMK Kota Masai 2 is a new school with 3200 students (2017
data) with 50 classes and consists of two school session and there is additional
numbers of 200 students compared to the previous schooling year.
Consequently, the number of students per classroom has increased
tremendously and become among the school with highest number of students in
Pasir Gudang district.
Although the school has been an advocate of 21st century teaching-
learning practice, this school only has a few 21st century classrooms which are
equipped with projectors and screen due to limited resources and financial
restriction. These classrooms are meant for high performing students of which
low performing students remain stay in conventional classroom. Moreover, this
dense population school can only afford to provide one ICT room for 21st Century
learning for the whole school teachers and students to share. This cause
problems to English teachers as this room is constantly booked by other
teachers and left with non-single period to be used every single schooling day.
Thus, it inspires us to provide a cabin classroom with the latest design and
function of 21st learning century. The EFC is basically a cabin classroom that will
be transformed into a fun and joyful learning centre for students to improve their
English communication. A proper classroom or language lab of this EFC will
provide a conducive environment to the students to focus and apply their
learning. Besides, the 21st learning century condition classroom can help the
teachers to provide a more meaningful and in contact lesson. The mini theatre
zone in EFC was aimed to provide a space to the students to showcase their
understanding of a literature class through a dramatization of a text or simply a
poem recitation class with a full complete props. Seating arrangement in this EFC
has been designed to follow the 21st learning style with detachable seats and
tables that can easily transformed the class from an individual to a grouping
task to fulfill the requirement of a particular lesson. Other than that, the pre-
installed technology can provide aids to the teacher to provide more meaningful
lesson by sharing knowledge and applied based content beyond the students
practical knowledge of their life.
3

Impromptu research with the students, shows that about 30-40% of them is a
kinesthetic and musical type of learner. For them, a lesson with a proper number
of physical activities combined with a music will gauge them more in learning.
Language is a subject that can be improved through application and
communication. Thus, in order to hold the Ministrys aspiration to become a
country that used and apply English in daily as our second language, the
changes should be started at school. It is known that, at home, students used
more their mother tongue language compared to English language. Therefore, it
is our aspiration that at the end of the project, we could provide a more
meaningful and joyful learning centre. The limited opportunities and scarce of ICT
resources can be solved at SMK Kota Masai 2 in future once this EFC becoming a
reality. This project will help teachers to provide a meaningful and lifelong
student centered learning experience. Consequently, teachers can empower
students to take ownership of their own learning and fulfill their potential.

B. Problem Statement
GPS is a grading system used by the ministry of education nowadays as
the indicator of the success rate of particular subject or a school overall
performance and it is ranging from 0.00 to 9.00. A 0.00 GPS of a subject
indicates that 100% of the exam candidates passed and obtained A+ while 9.00
shows that all the candidates failed the subject. The table below indicates GPS
English achievement for English Subject from 2010-2014.

GPS ACHIEVEMENT FOR ENGLISH SUBJECT (SMK KOTA MASAI 2)

Year 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014

GPS 8.13 7.17 7.27 7.09 7.23

English

Based on this table, it was found out that averagely students in this school
obtained grade D for English subject and thus can be implied that English is a
critical subject for SMK Kota Masai 2. One of the possible causes that lead to this
is due to limited conducive environment to practise the language. Due to the
large number of students, the school can only manage to provide 21st century
classes to high performing students. Students in science and geography classes
are the one who enjoyed this opportunity due to the limited budget and
classroom condition. The 1 year teaching experience with the low performing
students indicate students will be more disrupted during lesson even though the
teacher has tried their best to provide a technology based education in class.
Large number of students, the noise and an environment have caused them to
lose focus while learning and they tend to be disrupted by the passed by
students. Thus, it is hope that, a proper and conducive environment can help the
teacher to provide more meaningful learning experience to the students.

C. Objective
The objectives of this project are:
4

- To provide an English Fun Centre to cater the conducive learning

environment to the students
- To fulfill Principal of SMK Kota Masai 2 aspiration in gearing
education towards 21st century learning
- To inspire students that English is important, fun and easier to learn
Project Vision
- Access to 21st Century English Learning

Targeted Audience/ Impact

EFC is a cabin classroom project that aims to provide mainly to the students, a
fun and engaging classroom environment equipped with the access to 21st
century english learning and also for the teacher as a medium and tool in
providing in-context learning based to the current world issues or situations.

Sustainability
This project was aimed to be a continuous and sustainable project that will be
continued by other teachers. In 2018 and beyond, this Cabin will be managed
and maintained by Head of English Panel and other English teachers in SMK Kota
Masai 2 who aspire to continue and fully utilise this EFC for students benefit.

V.Project Details

a) Layout & Design

This classroom has been designed according to several characteristics of 21 century
classroom namely:

1. Flexible and conducive seating arrangements

Seating arrangement in SMKKM2 is mostly traditional seating arrangement where
teachers acts as a focal point and students are facing in the same direction. This seating
arrangement does not promote collaboration and cooperative learning where students
are expected to work individually. Furthermore, this traditional seating encourages
teacher to be a main source of all knowledge and students become dependant learners.
Hence, the practical proposed chairs and tables in this Cabin are interchangeable and
can be designed according to individual or group activities and assists teacher to act as a
facilitator while students take ownership of their own learning by participating actively in
problem-solving group discussions.

2.Collaborative learning

Learning through collaboration is one of the most effective forms of learning.. It can be
done by integrating technology and using tools like gamification or engaging in
discussions on social media. Other collaborative learning activities include group
projects, debates or peer reviews. All these different activities are great for developing
collaboration as well as for improving other useful skills like problem solving, creativity

and critical thinking.Although, there are many different ways in which any classroom can
be changed to meet the needs of modern learners, technology plays a big role in
developing most of these characteristics for modern classrooms. Sadly,in this school, this
collaborative learning through ICT only can be experienced by high performing students
as their classes are equipped with ICT due to limited resources. Therefore, this cabin
emphasises on the integration of ICT in the learning by installing Projector, Desktop,
Speakers, and Internet to promote collaborative learning among students. By installing
ICT, this Cabin will provide an equal access to joyful and life collaborative learning
experience for unfortunate students who cant afford to have Internet/Desktop at home.

3. Promoting Creativity and Critical Thinking Skills.

Role playing is an effective pedagogical approach to teach English language and

sdtudents learn best through imitation and role playing. It also stimulates meta cognitive
and promotes creativity and critical thinking skills through different contexts. Therefore,
this cabin comprises of Cost Effective Mini Theatre where Mini Stage will be installed to
provide an artistics space for students to perform brief skit or drama. In addition, this
Mini Stage will provide students a platform to creatively express themselves and nurture
their creativity and critical thinking skills. Furthermore it helps students to gain
confidence and leadership qualities through problem solving and exposure to real life
situation.

4. Mini Library.
This cabin will be equipped with mini library where it comprises suitable English reading
books ranging from form 1- form 5 proficiency level. This Mini library aims to increase
students English literacy in intervention classes who are still struggling to
read/comprehend English text despite of more than 10 years learning English. In order to
avoid formal setting and encourage students to find pleasure in reading, this cabin will
be equipped with Bean Bag and comfy cushion where introverts can find pleasure in
reading at the corner of the cabin where extrovert students can read on the cushion
provided situated in the middle of the classroom in casual setting.
