Improving Care Relationships through
Communication Training
A proposed Research Study by VSC Bureau Members

Background
We shared stories about positive health
outcomes and what makes them happen. We
selected important story themes for a Research
Topic:
Having care providers that think
outside the box and dont give up.

Research Question
What best improves the quality of care in care
relationships?
Training care triads in communication skills
OR
Usual training of care providers and their
supervisors
Setting: In home personal care and household assistance.
Population: Care triadscare providers, supervisors and
recipients.
Interventions: Care triad communication training vs. usual
training.

Intervention Methods
Initial training that includes:
Overview of best practices in communication.
Modules on 1) active listening, 2) elders communication
needs and limitations & 3) conflict resolution.
Signed agreement of goals/expectations.
Establishing ground rules for the care relationship, with
attention to strengths/limitations of all parties.
In home activity in active listening & restating.

Monthly review of progress in care relationships.


Supervisors receive training on explaining the evaluation of care
relationships. 6

Better Quality of Care among communication trainees:
1. Improved care relationships:
Clearer communication.
Professionalism.
Mutual respect and understanding.
Progression toward goals.
Ability to adjust to changing needs.

Experiential Training for Nursing Home Care
Providers

Background

Topic:
How to promote care providers that think
outside the box and dont give up so that
residents feel a sense of independence or
freedom, regardless of physical abilities.

Research Question
Which is a more effective method for training care
providers at a Long Term Care facility to think
outside the box?
An experiential training (Living in our Shoes).
OR
A standard lecture format.
Setting: Long term care facilities for older adults.
Population: Nurses and/or Resident Care Aides and older
adult residents.
Interventions: Training conducted by Living in Our Shoes vs.
Lectures.

Intervention Methods:
Living in Our Shoes Training
A sample checklist of training experiences:
Dining with other residents during meals.
Being confined and receiving assistance.
Being in a wheelchair.
Requesting assistance with toileting.
Being rushed/talked-over by a busy nurse.
Physical transfers.

Staff training will be overseen by a panel of long term care


facility residents.

Desired Results
1. Living in Our Shoes trainees will provide better
quality of care:
a) Improved attitudes related to patience, other soft skills,
and seeing residents as partners in care.
b) Timely responses to requests for assistance, with
common courtesy.
c) Ongoing interest in and attention to health problems,
changes in health, and overall well-being.

2. Residents will report improvements in


communication with Living in Our Shoes trainees:
a) Residents will feel heard.
b) Residents will feel as if their health changes are being
observed, recognized and followed-up on. 12
