The Black Lintel = Improved Corrosion Protection
Many Catnic lintels employ not one but two methods of
protection against corrosion attack: the unique,
sophisticated Duplex double protection system.

Both these processes rely on just one coating of zinc to
provide cathodic protection. The zinc protects the steel
but is itself liable to rust with aqueous solutions leaching
from the building fabric, and therefore corrode.

Catnics Cougar Open Back (page 14) lintels are easy to
use profiles allowing masonry to be built up continuously on
both the inner and outer leaves saving time and cost on
site. Cougars are fully insulated by moulding expanded
polystyrene bead into the CG style lintel, forming a ribbed
finish on the underside to provide a plaster key. The rigid
slotted base on CL & CU lintels provides plaster adhesion
and avoids the hazards of working with mesh.
Catnics Classic Combined Box (page 24) lintel is a
robust design which resists twisting during construction
and saves on blockwork and installation costs. Classics are
insulated using full height, continuous expanded
polystyrene board which is secured within the box.

Load ratios
Safe working loads, as defined by BS 5977: Part 2 for
cavity wall lintels refer to uniform distributed loads
applied in the inner to outer leaf ratios:
1:1 For lintels supporting masonry only
3:1 For lintels normally carrying timber floors
5:1 For lintels normally carrying concrete floors
The CL & CU lintel range refers to uniformly distributed
loads in the ratio of 19:1 when non standard or unusual
loading conditions occur.

high quality grade galvanised steel to BS EN 10327:2004
DX51D & Z275, with a black coloured polyester resin finish.

than 25mm
Apply concrete floor loads without ensuring that the total
loads are checked by a structural engineer, or by Catnic

Do not cut CG or CGH type lintels under any
circumstances
Apply point loads directly on lintel flanges
When using the Catnic CL & CU Open back range
with concrete floors, always ensure that the
blockwork is built tight against the inner vertical face
of the lintel, and that a mortar joint is added to the
top of the blockwork so that the floor units have an
even spread over the inner flange of the lintel
Avoid shock loading lintels during the installation of
