ED 478: ADVANCED SUPERVISED TEACHING: ______
ED 467: INTERN TEACHING: ______
Candidate: Alina Sturgis Date:
2-27-17

Content Area: Math Integrated Grade Level: 8

Subject Matter: Multiplication/ Division properties of

exponents

Lesson Content Description:

-Power of a Product
-Power of a Power
-Product of a Power
-Power of a Quotient
-Quotient of a Power
-Negative Exponents
-Zero Exponents

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:

-White board, homework review, individual white boards, video, questioning

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.HSA.SSE.A.2
Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see x4
- y4 as (x2)2 - (y2)2, thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (x2
- y2)(x2 + y2).

CCSS.Math.Content.HSF.IF.C.8.b
Use the properties of exponents to interpret expressions for exponential
functions. For example, identify percent rate of change in functions such as y =
(1.02), y = (0.97), y = (1.01)12, y = (1.2)/10, and classify them as representing
exponential growth or decay.

ELD Standard:
Expanding
Collaborative
1. Exchanging Information/Ideas
Contribute to class, group, and partner discussions by following turn-taking
rules, asking relevant questions, affirming others, adding relevant
information, and paraphrasing key ideas.

Common Core Lesson Objective:

Students will be able to multiply and divide monomials using exponent rules.

Assessment:
Formative: homework stamp, review, oral questioning, individual whiteboards

Summative: n/a

Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs

-Copy of vocab
-Exponent rules book
-peer tutoring
-priority seating

Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be utilizing in your

lesson to create and enhance instruction
If no technology is used, please explain why.

LESSON PREVIEW PRIOR TO TEACHING

Prior knowledge required for this lesson/objective success

Evaluate expressions with exponents
Review sub-skills required for this lesson/objective
Understand the exponent rules, and multiply and divide monomials
using those properties

LESSON PRESENTATION

INTO

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation

Teacher starts off by having students recall section 7.1 and the
properties
Students answer orally/ on white board about the properties
Then, recall 7.2 and division properties before going over homework
since benchmark stopped the flow of the lesson

THROUGH

Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective

Students take out 7.2 homework to get stamped
Read answers and have students put problems on the board
Present objective quiz review
Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective: Gradual
Release of Instruction
Teacher might need to do an example of the properties on pg. 12 for
one class that didnt get to it and give time for them to finish the
questions that correlated with it
Helps students at the board explain answer, make sure work is correct

Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment of Each

Students Performance/Closure of Instruction
Students put problems on the board, explain steps and exponent rule
used to the class.
Students participate in prompt-response and class discussion while
classmates are up at the board.

BEYOND

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students

Performance

Final Closure of Lesson: Closure question to reinforce instruction learned

-White board review, students complete problems independently. (problems
from white board review in the book and chapter review).
-restate objective and rules
Technology used to create and enhance Independent Practice:
- Multiplication and division properties of exponents video
