Introduction

Draft
ATTENTION: For the 2003.14 release, the installation has been broken up into
three separate installs which should be run in this order:
Third-party components (CD Vol 5)
EDM (CD Vol 5)
Drilling applications (CD Vol 6) and /or Production & Economics applications
(CD Vol 15)
Note that you will NOT be prompted to enter these CDs. Run the Third-part
Components insall first, from CD Vol 5. When it completes, insert CD Vol 5 and
run the EDM install. After it completes, insert either CD Vol 6 to install Drilling
applications, or CD Vol 15 to install Production and Economics applications.
For an outline of various insallation scenarios, see the hardcopy guide Planning
the EDT Installation, which is in the box. For complete installation details, see

Prior to installing Engineers Desktop R2003.14, review the following

sections.
Draft
Installation Checklist
The applications found in Engineers Desktop R2003.14 have
dependencies on the order of installation. The following checklist
outline phases of the installation process.

1. Upgrade the Operating System, if necessary. For Windows 2000,

Service Pack 4 must be installed for use with FLEXlm LAM
Client/Server. For Windows XP, Service Release 1 must be
installed.

2. Install Oracle (if you are using Oracle).

3. Patch Oracle (if you are using Oracle).

4. Before installing products you must load Adobe Acrobat Reader

(available on CD Volume 2) if you want to read the available
documentation.

5. Uninstall any existing FLEXlm license servers (LAM servers)

older than R2003.0 (FLEXlm version 7.2e). See LAM 2003.0
Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the
Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 5, for details.

6. Install the 2003 LAM server (FLEXlm version 7.2e) and obtain
product licenses. See LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes
(LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the
Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 5, for details.

7. The Edinburgh Petroleum Services (EPS) applications WellFlo

EDM and PanSystem EDM must be installed separately from
Landmark applications. The setup.exe for both WellFlo EDM and
PanSystem EDM can be found in the Petroleum Engineers folder

Licensing
If you are using a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock), you must install
FLEXlm 7.2i on the standalone or client machine.

To install FLEXlm 7.2i for bitlocks:

1. Go to your installed \LAM\bin folder, and run flexid.exe to install

the bitlock drivers.

2. To request a bitlock license, run \LAM\bin\lmtools.exe. Select

System Settings tab; provide the value you see in the FLEXID9
field.

MSDE Install Behavior with SQL Server Client/SQL Server

Microsoft Desktop Engine or MSDE is the standalone database
provided with the Engineers Desktop R2003.14 release. MSDE is a
new technology that provides local data storage that is compatible with
Microsoft SQL Server 2000. It is designed and optimized for use on
smaller computer systems, such as a single-user computer or small
workgroup server.

MSDE installation issues impacting PCs with SQL Server installed are
listed in MSDE Installation Issues on page 138 of this manual.

The Local Installation

Draft
This section describes the installation procedure for the Engineers
Desktop 2003.14 products in a standalone environment on a Windows
2000 system.

The Local installation will copy product software, MSDE database, and
all required support files to the designated install directory on the PCs
local hard drive.

Important Installation Notes!

This installation is not an upgrade from the 2003.11 Release. For more
information see Upgrading Release 2003.11 on page 3.

The person installing MUST be logged in with local administrator privileges;

otherwise, programs will fail to install properly.

ALL open programs should be closed prior to the commencement of the

installation, including the Windows Office Toolbar.

Landmark recommends the use of the Volume 15 CD when installing the

Production and Economics applications. Placing the installation in a local or
network directory may cause errors during the install. Windows long file names
may truncate to the 8.3 format due to path length limitations (256 characters) in
the Operating System. This may result in the installation not finding the files.

Both UNC paths for network locations and mapped driver letters are supported by
this installation. UNC paths pointing to local drives are not supported.

The Common Installer will first check the system for the following:

Checks System for: Result

.NET Framework Prompts with the choice to install the
.NET Framework.
Window 2000, XP, and Windows 2003 The Common Installation will check for
Server operating systems the presence of one of these operating
systems. If none of these operating
systems are detected, a message appears
and the installation will not proceed.

12. The hard disk space required for the components selected is
displayed under the selection area.

The Space Required on drive informs the installer how much

disk space will be used by Setup for the selections made.
Changing the selections will affect the amount of disk space Draft
required. This does not include the amount of disk space
required for the MSDE installation.

The Space Available on drive lets the installer know how

much disk space is available on the system. This is a good
indicator as to whether the drive can accommodate the selected
applications or database tools.

The Engineers Desktop applications are all separately licensed.

Select only the application(s) for which the user is licensed.

13. Click Next.

If setup detects that LAM (License Application Manager) 2003 is

not installed, the Setup Type Selection for Landmark FLEXlm
Installation window appears.

FLEXlm is a licensing method common to all Landmark products.

It provides a single, licensing system that integrates across PC and
network environments. FLEXlm Licensing files and FLEXlm
Bitlocks are supported for Engineers Desktop applications. It
requires a specific folder to store the license files.

Machine Cleanup

The following cleanup procedures should be performed after

uninstallation and before attempting to install R2003.14.
Draft
Common practice for installs when errors occur is to clean the
Windows Temp directory(s) before starting another install. The
common directory names are:

C:\Windows\Temp or C:\Winnt\Temp

C:\Temp

C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local

Settings\Temp

Below are the details of this cleanup procedure.

1. Highlight all files and directories under the Temp directory and
delete. Do not delete the TEMP folders themselvesjust delete
all files and folders under those Temp directories.

A Read-Only error may occur when deleting these files. De-select

the file in question and re-try the delete.

Typically several in-use files can not be deleted.

2. When you receive Crystal Reports + ARIES + TOW registration

errors, manually registering the Windows\System32\Atl.dll
solves the problem.

Unit Symbols Display Incorrectly

Superscripts and symbols occur in several EDM unit measure labels
(there are 128 labels affected).

In a database built with a 7-bit character set, these labels cannot be

correctly stored (in the database) or displayed (on the screen).
Specifically, this is known to occur in an Oracle database which has
been built with the US7ASCII character set. As an example of the
effect, users will see ?C instead of C.

Landmark recommends installing EDM on a database using an 8-bit

character set or a Unicode character set. If using a 7-bit character set is
unavoidable, contact Landmark for an update to convert the labels.

Licensing Problems

To verify the license for a USB dongle (bitlock), use the following
procedure.
Draft
1. Plug in the USB bitlock.

2. Launch License Tool Manager. This should be version 7.2i. To

check the version number use the Help > About menu in the tool.

3. Select the System Settings tab.

4. Verify that the FLEXID9 field contains a number.

5. If no number appears in this field,

check that the bitlock is plugged in properly

check that the drivers have been installed properly.

Note:

Bitlocks are not supported by OpenWorks. Clients who want to connect to

OpenWorks must use regular network licenses, not USB bitlocks.

Hence, clients using OpenWire, Engineers Link, EDM to OpenWorks, and

COMPASS Live Link must use Network licences.

Online Help

How to use Online Help

The Engineers Desktop uses two types of online help for each
application. Most online help formats are shipped using Microsoft
HTML Help. Online help can be accessed from the applications
menubar or by using the F1 key to access context-sensitive help.

Using Microsoft HTML Help

Microsoft HTML Help is an online Help system that is based on the
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) format. HTML Help is
comprised of a single .CHM file. This file is launches the tri-pane
HTML Help Viewer. The three panes are as follows:

The toolbar pane is used to navigate back and forward through

topics, print topics, and Show/Hide the HTML topics.

The navigational pane is used to navigate a Table of Contents

(Contents tab), a list of key words (Index tab), and a full text
search mechinism (Search tab).

The topics pane is used to display the various topics in HTML

format.

Using WebHelp
WebHelp is also an online Help system that is based on the HTML
(Hypertext Markup Language) format. WebHelp also contains a similar
tri-pane layout to HTML Help, but it is an uncompiled help system.
This uncompiled Help system supports a variety of browsers and
platforms. WebHelp features include: a table of contents, an index, a
glossary, and full-text search. WebHelp is compatible with most
browsers.
