Problem Set 1: (To be submitted on Tuesday, February 21, 2017)
Instructions:
1. Solve the following problems in chronological order.
2. Write solutions neatly, clearly and in detail. Avoid too much
erasure.
3. Use black or blue ink only.

1. A hydraulic turbine receives water from a reservoir at an elevation of 100

meters above it. What is the minimum water flow in kg/s to produce a steady
turbine output of 50 MW?

2. A steam condenser receives 10 kg per second of steam with an enthalpy of

2570 kJ/kg. Steam condenses into liquid and leaves with an enthalpy of 160
kJ/kg. Cooling water passes through the condenser with temperature
increases from 13 oC to 24 oC. Calculate the cooling water flow rate in kg/s.

3. What is the final temperature after compression of a Diesel cycle if the initial
temperature is 32 oC and the clearance is 8%?

4. Kerosene is pumped into an aircraft fuel tank through a hose that has an
inside diameter of 4cm. If the velocity of the kerosene is 8 m/s through the
hose. Determine the mass flow rate. Assume that kerosene has a density of
800 kg/m3

5. Steam enters a turbine stage with an enthalpy of 3700 KJ/kg and a velocity of
80 m/s and leaves with an enthalpy of 2864 KJ/kg with a velocity of 128m/s. If
the rate of a steam flow through the turbine if 0.44 kg/s, what is the work
done in KW?

6. The enthalpy of air is increased by 139.586 kJ/kg in a compressor. The rate of

air flow is 16.42 kg/min. The power input is 48.2 kW. Determine the heat loss
from the compressor in kW.

7. It is proposed to build a dam in a river where the flow rate is 10 m 3/sec and a
32-m drop in elevation can be achieved for flow through a turbine. If the
turbine is 82 percent efficient, what maximum power that can be achieved?
Specific gravity of river water is 0.998.

8. A pump is lifting water through 5.5 m to fill a 570 cubic meter tank. The over-
all energy efficiency is 80%. Calculate the length of time that 7.50 kW applied
to the pump will require completing the job in minutes.

9. A Carnot engine requires 35 kJ/s from the hot source. The engine produces 15
kW of power and the temperature of the sink is 26 oC. What is the
temperature of the hot source in oC?

10.A car engine with a power output of 65 hp has a thermal efficiency of 24%.
Determine the fuel consumption rate of this car if the fuel has a heating value
of 19,000 Btu/lbm.

11.What is the power of the pump, horsepower, if it delivers 950 gal/min of

water against a head of 10m?

12.The flow of river is 4.25 m3/s at a site where a 23 m hydrostatic head can be
created by the erection of dam. What is the potential capacity of a
hydroelectric power plant if installed at this site? Consider that the hydraulic
efficiency of energy conversion can be 80%, and that the electric efficiency
can be 90%.
13.The efficiency of an ideal Otto cycle is 40%. What is the hot-air value of k if
the compression ratio is 6.20?

14.The efficiency of an Otto engine is 55% and the stroke volume is 35 liters. If
the heat added at the beginning of the combustion is 12.6 kJ, calculate the
mean effective pressure.

15.The enthalpy of air is increased by 139.586 kJ/kg in a compressor. The rate of

air flow is 16.42 kg/min. The power input is 48.2 kW. Determine the heat loss
from the compressor in kW.
