SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN TLE8

(Productivity, Humility)
January 26, 2017

I. OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson the student should able to:
a. identify the difference between grinding, whetting, and honing;
b. value the importance of sharpening cutting tools;
c. follow the procedure in grinding, honing tools and sharpening saw.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Sharpening Cutting Tools
Reference: Effective Technology And Home Economics, pp. 233-235

III. PROCEDURE:
Daily Routine
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
I. ACTIVITY
The teacher shows picture to the students

II. ANALYSIS
SHARPENING TOOLS
- Is the process of making their cutting edges thinner, finner, and kinner to
be able to function better for cutting tools and they last longer when they
properly maintained
- If the edge is already blunt the tools needs to be sharpened.

3 TYPES INCLUDED IN SHARPENING

Grinding
Whetting
Honing

GRINDING
-Reshaping the cutting edge of the cutting tools

STEPS IN GRINDING A PLANE IRON OR CHISEL

a. Turn the grindstone towards the plane iron, use the guide to ensure a flat even,
bevel and deep into water from time to time to keep it cool
b. To get the right grinding angle about (20 to 30 degree)
c. Move the plane iron from side to side to grid the full width of the bevel and
keep the wheel turning.

WHETTING
- It is the process of sharpening the edge of tools.

STEPS IN WHETTING
1. Use the kerosene, water on a whetstone or iron in an oilstone in sharpening the edge.
2. After you have ground the beveled edge remove the wire edge by whetting on the fine
side of the oilstone, whet the tool alternately on the beveled side raise the heel of the tool
slightly and apply moderate pressure and keep the tool flat on the stone

HONING
- Is the process of sharpening the edge tools after whetting
- It also done using a limestone to ensure a keener cutting edge

Steps in honing tools

1. Place the bevel of the plane iron with its back edge slightly raised on the stone. To
keep the bevel straight move your hands parallel to the stone so that the angle
between the plane iron and the stone stays the same throughout stroke.
2. Remove the wire edge by making a few strokes with the flat side of the plane iron
held flat on the stone avoid even the slightest bevel on the flat side.
3. Finish with a few strokes on a leather strap to produce a keener edge.

SHARPENING SAW
- Consist of four main steps the top jointing, setting the teeth, filing and side jointing
Top jointing
-this is needed only when the teeth of the saw are damaged or of different heights.
Setting
-bending the teeth of the saw slightly outward and usually done by means of saw set
which is used in springing over the upper part of the teeth, one to the right, the other
one to the left when the teeth of saw have been set they can now cut a kerf slightly
wider than thickness of the blade.

Filling
-the process of sharpening the teeth of a saw by using a triangular slim

Steps to be followed in filing

1. Clam the saw so that the gullet is about 1/8 inch above the jaws. The file should cut
on the push stroke only and should be slightly lifted on the return stroke.
2. First, place the saw in the vise with the handle to your right start sharpening in the
end of the saw. set the file in the v-notch between two teeth to the left first tooth that
is bent outward.
IV. APPLICATION:
(Perform the proper way of grinding a plane iron or chisel)

V. EVALUATION:
_______________1. Contains the four main steps namely top jointing, setting the
teeth, filing and side jointing?
_______________2. This is the process of making their cutting edge thinner, finer,
and keener?
_______________3. Process of reshaping the edge of cutting tools?
_______________4. In this process you need to use kerosene or water on a
whetstone?
_______________5. It is done using a limestone to ensure a keener cutting edge?
