Dissection Rules and Procedures

You must know all of this information in order to dissect. Make it easy on yourself and
get an A the first time you take the quiz.

1. Dissection means the thorough examination of an organism.


2. Rinse the specimen with water prior to dissecting.
3. Any liquid that gets out of the tray should be wiped up immediately.
4. Any tool not in use should be in the tool case. Tools should never be lying around.
5. Never cut until you absolutely have to AND have been told to.
6. Do not make incisions (cuts) while holding the specimen. It should be firmly
pinned down in the dissection tray.
7. Never cut towards others or yourself.
8. Only pins and probes can be stuck through the specimen.
9. Never ingest any specimen parts.
10. Any parts of the specimen removed need to be left in the dissection tray until the
end of the dissection.
11. All specimens and their parts need to be placed in a baggie for disposal.
12. Never take any parts of the specimen from the classroom.
13. All tools need to be cleaned and dried prior to being putting away.
14. Tools should only be used as instructed. Severe consequences could result from
the misuse of tools.
15. Stay seated during dissection labs and do not make sudden movements.

Tools you need to be able to identify:


1. Forceps (not tweezers)
2. Scalpel
3. Probe
4. Angled probe
5. Pick
