Penetrant testing (PT), how it works
3
The penetrant method of non-destructive testing is based on capillary penetration of indicator
liquid (penetrant) into the surface defects (cracks, pores etc.). After intermediate cleaning and
subsequent drying, a developer is applied as a thin, white layer onto the surface to be
inspected. The developer pulls the penetrant out of the surface defects and makes them
visible as coloured, linear or rounded indications. Documentation is possible by means of
adhersive foil, photographic or video techniques.

Areas of use:
Aircrafts industry, Metallurgy, nuclear industry, Electrical engineering, Engineering, Foundry, Blanking, Shipbuilding, Medicine,
Car production.
Used in temperature ranges from -5 to + 50. In low temperatures (from -5 to + 10 ) it is necessary to increase time of
penetrating. One must take into account peculiar specifications according to DIN EN ISO 3452 part 2 & EN 571 part 1. For
examination in higher temperatures (from +10 to + 175 ) Super-Chek was especially developed..

Present system correspond to requirements of world standards: MIL-I 25135E, MIL STD 6866, AMS 2644, EN 571-1. All
components meet the European requirements on Health, Safety and Ergonomics. The inspection system is basically made of
stainless steel and equipped with first class means for functional control, delivered by producers like Siemens, Rittal,
Weidmller, Festo, Sick, Balluf.
7
Test panels
Sensitivity of inspection media, quality of intermediate cleaning and control of the whole penetrant
process are determined on reference blocks, i.e. on metal panels with defined roughness and provided
with standardized artificial cracks(defects).
8
Test panel WTP-1 & WTP-2
Designed to evaluate removability of the fluorescent penetrant. Panel
WTP-2 is a stainless steel panel, measuring 46 inches and 0,090 thick
with two parallel medium rough strips, each 61,5 inches, separated
by a smooth 1 inch strip. The panel is used to evaluate the quality of
removability according to the requirements of MIL-STD-6866 & ASTM E-
1417.
KDS-Test panel
Twin KDS Panel, with the cracked sections side by side, facilitate quick and
accurate determination of relative defect visibility.
Twin KDS Panel, with the grit blasted sections side by side, make
fluorescent background comparison simple.
Twin KDS Panel comes in two models.
Model WW for use with Method A water washable penetrants. Model PE for
use with Method B,C,D nonwater-washable penetrants.
The difference between two models is in crack size. Model WW cracks range
from 1/22 1/6 inches while Model PE cracks range from 1/64 to
1/11inches.
Comparator UTE-3
Designed for right determination of ultraviolet radiation intensity at workplace
if using fluorescent penetrants.
Used to compare size of pores and comparison board of optical probes with
text according to Jger 1 and Jger 2.

Magnetic particle testing
The magnetic particle testing method (MT) is one of the most sensitive, reliable and productive NDT-method for
surface inspection of products from ferro-magnetic materials. The method is based on the attraction of ferro-
magnetic particles by force of leakage flux like cracks, laps, leak of fusion, pores which appear above surface
defects after adequate magnetization. MT can be used for surface defects (open to the surface) and under certain
conditions for detection of near-surface defects. Higher probability of detection is given, when the direction of a
defect is perpendicular to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The smaller the angle between defect and
field direction the weaker the indication
Circular, longitudinal and combined magnetization are used for MT. There are a lot of magnetization schemes,
some of which are shown below.
Circular Longitudinal

Reference block 1 (EN ISO 9934-2)
The reference block is a disc with 2 types of natural cracks on the surface.
Coarse cracks are the result of the polishing, fine cracks are the result of
stress corrosion. The block is permanently magnetized by central
conductor through the hole. Estimation of magnetic particle suspensions is
made by visual or other appropriated method of comparison of the
indications.

Leak inspection
Bubble method
The essential matter of the method is as follows:
Registration of local leakages in an under-test item by appearing of indicator gas bubbles in indicator liquid
(indicator cover). The method is used for testing the impermeability of reservoirs welded joint, fluid power and
gas systems under the overpressure,(which can be created by vacuum pump).
Foam-film indicator(Proof Check) is applied on the under-test joint weld and overpressure is generated. Air
(check gas), penetrating through the joint weld microflaws, impacts mechanically on foam-film indicator,
accumulating on the defective place, deforms it. In this case bubbles or foam swelling can be seen .

Radiographic film
An ultra-fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class I film having excellent sharpness and high discrimination characteristics. It
is suitable for use with any low atomic number material where fine image detail is imperative. Its ultra-fine grain makes it
IX 50 useful in high energy, low subject contrast applications where high curie isotopes or high output X-ray machines permit its
use. Wide exposure latitude has been demonstrated in high subject contrast applications.IX50 is generally used in direct
exposure techniques or with lead screens.
An extremely fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class I film suitable for detection of minute defects. It is applicable to the
inspection of low atomic number materials with low kilovoltage X-ray sources as well as inspection of higher atomic
IX 80 number materials with high kilovoltage X-ray or gamma ray sources. Wide exposure latitude has been demonstrated in
high subject contrast applications. IX80 is generally used in direct exposure techniques or with lead screens.
A very fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class II film suitable for the inspection of light metals with low activity radiation
sources and for inspection of thick, higher density specimens with high kilovoltage X-ray or gamma ray sources. Wide
IX 100 exposure latitude has been demonstrated in high contrast subject applications. Although IX100 is generally used in direct
exposure techniques or with lead screens, it is suitable for use with fluorescent or fluorometallic screens.
A high speed, fine grain, high contrast ASTM Class III film suitable for inspection of a large variety of specimens with low-
to-high kilovoltage X-ray and gamma ray sources. It is particularly useful when gamma ray sources of high activity are
